Peel Gallery’s March exhibition, titled When stillness becomes you, features new works by North Carolina based artist Reneesha McCoy. Known for her expressive figurative work, McCoy continues to explore and showcase life through a very personal lens. McCoy describes the exhibition stating, “When stillness becomes you represents the moment or moments you sit still and soak in everything around you and open yourself to the possibility to bend reality.” Mixed mediums align with various colors, gestural lines, conceptual poses and exaggerated bodies to play with the ideas of perception and reality. She celebrates the consequence of life and nature in relation to the female body, and she employs mixed media to enhance the chaotic nature of being. A repetition of lines and strayed brush strokes create female forms that simultaneously exude confidence, weakness, excitement, and fear in moments of contemplation. She uses her experience of reconnecting and understanding her identity after childbirth to highlight the internal and external effects of thoughtfulness and meditation. When stillness becomes you is a marker of Reneesha’s continuous journey of self now going beyond motherhood. The artist’s ability to illustrate the emotional capacity of a figure amongst still-life/ in mid-life carries a sense of possibility and potential. This exhibition stands as an invitation to viewers to take a moment of their own and feel the power and altering nature of stillness.
