This hidden gem on Falls Lake is perfect for little ones. The trail winds through woods to a lakeside overlook. The nature center has free exhibits and hosts family programs. Bring a picnic β there are tables near the trailhead with lake views.

Shelley Lake - Lake Trail

The quintessential Raleigh family walk. A paved loop around a beautiful lake with ducks, turtles, and a playground at the south end. Connect to the Ironwood Trail for a short wooded detour that feels like a "real" hike. The Sertoma Arts Center on the lake has art classes for kids.
Prairie Ridge Ecostation (NC Museum of Natural Sciences)

A free outdoor extension of the natural sciences museum. Butterfly gardens, a pond with frogs and turtles, and short trails through meadow and forest habitats. Perfect for nature-loving toddlers. Free admission, free parking.

Eno River State Park - Cox Mountain Trail (to the River)

The most popular family hike on the Eno River. The trail descends through hardwood forest to a rocky riverbank where kids can wade, throw rocks, and explore. Bring water shoes. On warm days, this is the best swimming hole in the Triangle. (Note: go only to the river β the full Cox Mountain loop is 4 miles and steep.)
Al Buehler Trail (Duke University)

A beautiful wooded trail behind Duke's football stadium. Used by runners and walkers. The forest is gorgeous in every season β wildflowers in spring, shade in summer, color in fall. Well-maintained and safe. Free parking at the Duke soccer stadium lot.
West Point on the Eno - Nature Trail

Start at the restored McCown-Mangum Farmstead and loop through woods along the Eno River. Kids love crossing the small footbridge and exploring the old mill site. The river is shallow enough for wading in spots. Bring a picnic for the tables near the parking area.
Cary / Apex Area
Hemlock Bluffs Nature Preserve

A magical spot in suburban Cary. The preserve protects rare Eastern Hemlock trees growing on north-facing bluffs. Short trails wind through forest with interpretive signs about the ecology. The Stevens Nature Center has exhibits and nature programs. Free.
Insider tip: Go in spring for wildflowers or winter for the evergreen hemlocks β both are stunning. The board meeting room hosts free children's nature programs monthly.
Lake Crabtree County Park - Lake Trail

A pleasant lakeside walk near the Cary/Morrisville border. Fishing pier, playgrounds, and a boat launch. The paved section is perfect for strollers. Mountain bikers use other park trails, so stick to the marked walking paths with kids.
Chapel Hill / Carrboro Area
Carolina North Forest - Creek Trail

A university-owned forest that feels worlds away from campus. Wide fire roads and narrower trails through mature forest. The creek crossing is a highlight for kids. Free, open to the public. Parking at the Estes Drive trailhead.
NC Botanical Garden - Nature Trail

Part of UNC, this botanical garden has cultivated gardens plus natural woodland trails. The Children's Wonder Garden section is specifically designed for young explorers. Seasonal plantings mean something is always blooming. Free admission; donations welcome.
