Creative Family Weekend: Art, Music, and Making in the Triangle
The Triangle has an arts scene that punches way above its weight. From world-class museums to scrappy DIY spaces, there is creative inspiration everywhere. this weekend is for the families who would rather make something than watch something.
Saturday: Visual Art + Making
9:00 AM β Breakfast at Guglhupf (Durham)
Start at Guglhupf on W Main Street for pastries and coffee. The bakery itself is beautifully designed β exposed brick, natural light, and art on the walls. It sets the creative mood for the day.
10:00 AM β NC Museum of Art (Raleigh)
Drive 20 minutes to the NC Museum of Art. The permanent collection is free and has enough range to captivate any age β from ancient Egyptian artifacts to contemporary installations. For kids, focus on:
Pick up a family guide at the front desk β it has conversation starters for each gallery.
Art tip: Give each kid a sketchbook and pencil. Let them sketch one piece they love. This changes the museum visit from looking to engaging.
12:00 PM β Lunch at Fiction Kitchen (Raleigh)
Creative food for a creative day. Fiction Kitchen does comfort food with a twist. Outdoor patio when it is nice. The seasonal dishes are always interesting conversation starters.
1:30 PM β Pottery or Paint Studio

4:00 PM β Golden Belt Arts District (Durham)
Drive to Golden Belt in Durham's old tobacco warehouse district. Multiple artist studios, galleries, and creative businesses are here. Wander the hallways and peek into open studios. The vibe is incredible β raw industrial space filled with art. Check if there is an Art Walk scheduled (usually first Fridays, but sometimes weekends).
5:30 PM β Dinner at Pizzeria Toro (Durham)
Wood-fired pizza on W Main Street. The space is artsy and the pizza is excellent. Kids can watch the pizza being made in the open kitchen. For a more casual option, Mellow Mushroom in Durham has funky decor and build-your-own pizzas.
Sunday: Music + Performance
9:30 AM β Music and Brunch at Cup A Joe (Raleigh)
Cup A Joe on Hillsborough Street sometimes has live music on weekend mornings. Even without live music, it is a great neighborhood coffee shop to start a creative Sunday.
10:30 AM β Musical Instrument Play

Eat on the lawn and listen to whoever is playing β there is often live music on the Weaver Street lawn on nice weekends. The food bar inside has good options for everyone.
1:00 PM β Carrboro ArtsCenter or CAM Raleigh
ArtsCenter in Carrboro often has family matinee performances β theater, music, or puppetry. Check their calendar.
CAM Raleigh (Contemporary Art Museum) on S Salisbury Street in downtown Raleigh has rotating contemporary art exhibitions that are often interactive and kid-engaging. Free admission.
2:30 PM β Free Play at a Creative Playground

Fuel future creativity with a stop at:
5:00 PM β Home for a Family Art Jam
Take those supplies home and make something together. Put on music, spread out supplies, and let everyone create. No screens, no agenda. Just making.
