Parks with Dog Parks AND Playgrounds
Millbrook Exchange Park (Raleigh)
Millbrook Exchange Park has one of Raleigh's best dog parks plus a playground, tennis courts, and a swimming pool (seasonal). The dog park has separate areas for large and small dogs, is fully fenced, and has water stations. The playground is just across the parking lot.

Oakwood Dog Park at Dix Park (Raleigh)
Dorothea Dix Park is Raleigh's crown jewel park-in-progress. The Oakwood Dog Park on the grounds is popular and well-maintained, with separate large and small dog areas. While there's no traditional playground at Dix yet (it's still developing), the massive open fields are perfect for kids to run, fly kites, and roll down hills. The sunflower field in late summer is magical.
Details: Free. Off Lake Wheeler Road. Restrooms near the dog park. Parking in the Dix lots.
Northgate Park (Durham)
Northgate Park has a fenced off-leash dog area and a playground with restrooms. The Ellerbe Creek Greenway runs through the park, so you can combine a dog walk with a family stroll. The dog area is a good size with shade trees.
Details: Free. Off West Club Boulevard. Parking lot on-site.
Carolina Pines Dog Park (Raleigh)
Carolina Pines Park has a nice fenced dog park with large and small dog areas, plus a community center, playground, and sports fields. It's a complete family-and-dog destination.

Fred G. Bond Metro Park (Cary)
Bond Park is one of the best parks in the Triangle, period. Dogs are welcome on leash on all park trails (over 4 miles) and at the large off-leash dog park. The park also has two playgrounds, a boathouse, picnic shelters, and restrooms. You could easily spend a whole day here with kids and dogs.
Details: Free. Off Cary Parkway. Multiple parking areas.
Trail Parks Great for Dogs and Kids
Lake Johnson Park (Raleigh)
Dogs on leash are welcome on all trails at Lake Johnson. The paved loop around the lake is about 3 miles and passes through forest and along the water. Kids can fish from the pier while the dog enjoys the walk. No off-leash area.
Umstead State Park (Raleigh / Cary)
Dogs are allowed on leash on all Umstead trails. The wide, shaded trails are comfortable for dogs and kids alike. Bring water for everyone. No off-leash areas.
American Tobacco Trail (Durham / Chatham County)
Dogs on leash are welcome on the entire ATT. The paved trail is great for dogs, strollers, and bikes all at once. It gets crowded on nice weekends, so be mindful of your dog's comfort with passersby.

Seasonal Considerations for Dogs and Kids
Many Triangle vets recommend year-round flea, tick, and heartworm prevention for dogs who spend time on trails and at parks. Ask your vet about the best protection for your area.
Having a dog and kids doesn't mean you can't get out and enjoy the parks. The Triangle makes it easier than most places.
