What to Expect
Duke Forest is a working research forest, not a recreational park. That said, hiking and biking are welcome on designated trails and fire roads. The forest is divided into six divisions, each with its own trailhead and character. Most trails are unpaved fire roads or singletrack paths through mature hardwood and pine forest.
Hours: Open daily from sunrise to sunset. Free admission.
Important: Duke Forest has no restrooms, no water fountains, and no trash cans. Pack in, pack out, and plan bathroom stops before you arrive.
Best Divisions for Family Hikes
Korstian Division (Chapel Hill / Durham border)
The Korstian Division is the most popular and accessible for families. It's located off NC-751 between Durham and Chapel Hill, with a parking area on the south side of the road. The main fire road, Gate 12, leads into the forest and connects to several loop options.
Recommended family hike: Walk Gate 12 for about 0.75 miles and turn right on the Wooden Bridge Trail. This loop adds about 1.5 miles and crosses a pretty creek on a wooden bridge (kids love it). Total round trip: about 3.5 miles. Mostly flat with minor elevation changes.
Durham Division
The Durham Division is off Mt. Sinai Road and offers wider fire roads that are great for bike-hiking with kids. The terrain is gentle and the forest is beautiful. Fire roads here are wide enough for side-by-side walking, which is nice with younger kids who want to chat.
Recommended family hike: Gate 26 to Cement Bridge Road loop, about 2 miles. Flat and easy.
Hillsborough Division
For families seeking a slightly more adventurous hike, the Hillsborough Division offers trails along the Eno River. The trails here are narrower and more rugged than in other divisions. Best for kids ages 7 and up with some hiking experience.

Seasonal Highlights in Duke Forest
Duke Forest rewards families who are willing to slow down, look closely, and embrace the quiet. It's one of our favorite places to hike in the Triangle.
