Best Campgrounds Near the Triangle
Falls Lake State Recreation Area
Falls Lake is the closest major campground to Raleigh, just 30 minutes north. The Rolling View campground has 107 sites with water and electric hookups, flush toilets, and hot showers. Many sites back up to the lake with water views.
Details: Sites run about $20-35/night depending on hookups. Reserve through Recreation.gov. Open March through November. Each site has a picnic table and fire ring. The beach and swimming area are within walking distance from many sites.
Best for: First-time camping families who want amenities and easy access.
Jordan Lake State Recreation Area
Southwest of the Triangle, Jordan Lake has several campground areas. Poplar Point is my favorite for families, with 591 sites (yes, it's huge), water and electric hookups, flush toilets, and hot showers. Sites are spacious and mostly shaded. The lake has a beach, boat launch, and great fishing.
Details: $20-35/night. Reserve through Recreation.gov. Open year-round (some areas seasonal). About 35-40 minutes from Raleigh.
Best for: Families who want a beach camping experience without driving to the coast.
Eno River State Park (Primitive)
If your family is ready for a more rugged experience, Eno River State Park has backcountry campsites accessible only by hiking in. Sites are primitive (no water, no electricity, composting toilets nearby). This is real camping, and it's a wonderful experience for families with kids ages 8 and up.
Details: About $10/night per site. Reserve through the park office. Sites are 1-3 miles from the trailhead at Fews Ford.
Best for: Experienced families who want a true wilderness feel close to home.
Raven Rock State Park
About an hour south of Raleigh, Raven Rock has a small campground with 12 primitive sites accessible by a 1-mile hike. The sites are shaded and quiet, and the park's signature feature, a 150-foot rock outcropping over the Cape Fear River, is spectacular. Canoe-in campsites are also available along the river.
Details: About $10/night. Reserve through the park. Composting toilets near the campground. No water at sites (bring your own).
Best for: Families looking for adventure and a memorable landscape.
Kerr Lake State Recreation Area
An hour north of the Triangle, Kerr Lake is a large reservoir on the NC/Virginia border. Multiple campground areas offer a range of site types, from primitive tent-only to full hookups. The lake has sandy beaches, excellent fishing, and a quieter feel than Falls Lake or Jordan Lake.
Details: $17-35/night depending on campground and hookups. Reserve through Recreation.gov. About 60 minutes from Raleigh.
Best for: Families who want a weekend getaway feel without a long drive.
