Family Guide to First Friday Art Events in the Triangle

First Friday in Raleigh is one of the best free monthly events in the Triangle, and it's more family-friendly than many parents realize. On the first Friday of every month, galleries across downtown Raleigh open their doors with free exhibitions, opening receptions, and often live music. Here's how to make it a great experience with kids.

What Is First Friday?

First Friday is a self-guided gallery walk that happens the first Friday of every month, year-round. Galleries and studios across downtown Raleigh — primarily in the Warehouse District and along Davie and Blount streets — open from 6 PM to approximately 9 PM with free admission.

It's part art, part social event, part neighborhood exploration. The vibe is casual and welcoming.

The Best First Friday Route for Families

Start at Artspace (6:00 PM)

Artspace at 201 E Davie Street is the anchor of First Friday and the best starting point for families. This converted warehouse has over 30 working artist studios on two floors, plus a main gallery with rotating exhibitions.

  • Why kids love it: Many artists open their studio doors and welcome visitors. Kids can see art being made and talk to real, working artists. Some studios have prints or small works for sale at affordable prices.
  • Tip: The main gallery usually has an opening reception with refreshments.
  • Walk to the Warehouse District (6:45 PM)

Head south on Blount Street toward the Warehouse District (roughly around West Cabarrus and West Martin streets). This area has several galleries:

  • CAM Raleigh — always free, often interactive contemporary art
  • Various pop-up galleries — the Warehouse District has a rotating cast of small galleries that participate in First Friday
  • Explore Fayetteville Street (7:30 PM)

If your kids still have energy, walk north to Fayetteville Street. Some restaurants and businesses along the pedestrian mall host art displays or live music during First Friday.

End with a Treat (8:00 PM)

    Finish your evening with dessert:

  • Videri Chocolate Factory in the Warehouse District for hot chocolate and artisan chocolates
  • Lucettegrace on Salisbury Street for pastries and gelato
  • Morgan Street Food Hall for a variety of kid-friendly food options
  • Tips for First Friday with Kids

    Timing

  • Arrive at 6 PM. The first hour is the least crowded and most family-friendly. By 8 PM, the crowd skews more toward adults-only socializing.
  • Plan to stay 1.5—2 hours. That's enough time to visit 3—4 galleries and grab a treat.
  • Preparation

  • Eat dinner before you go or plan to eat early on the walk. Festival food options are limited (this isn't a food event).
  • Bring a sketchbook and pencils. Many kids enjoy sketching in galleries. Ask permission first, but most galleries welcome it.
  • Dress for walking. You'll cover about a mile total.
  • Engagement

  • Play "gallery critic." At each gallery, have everyone pick their favorite piece and explain why. Kids' observations about art are often hilarious and insightful.
  • Collect gallery cards. Most galleries have free postcards or business cards. Kids can make a collection.
  • Set a small budget. If your child wants to buy a small piece of art (a print, a postcard), set a $5—$10 budget. Supporting artists with even a small purchase teaches kids about valuing creativity.
  • Logistics

  • Parking: The Blount Street or Cabarrus Street parking decks are your best bet. Street parking downtown is free after 5 PM on Fridays.
  • Bathrooms: Artspace and CAM Raleigh have public restrooms.
  • Strollers: Work fine on the sidewalks but can be awkward in smaller gallery spaces.
  • First Friday by Season

    Spring/Fall (Best)

Perfect weather for walking between galleries. The outdoor vibe is at its peak.

    Summer

Hot but still fun. Start later (6:30 PM) and stick to air-conditioned galleries.

    Winter

Fewer people and a cozier feel. Some galleries serve hot drinks at receptions. Bundle up for the walks between venues.

    Beyond Raleigh

While Raleigh's First Friday is the biggest, other Triangle communities have similar events:

  • Durham Third Friday — gallery walk in downtown Durham
  • Carrboro Art Walks — periodic events (check local calendar)
  • Pittsboro Gallery Walk — monthly events in the charming downtown
  • Why Take Kids to First Friday

First Friday teaches kids that art isn't just something in museums behind velvet ropes. It's alive, it's in their community, and the people who make it are real, approachable humans. That lesson alone is worth a monthly evening out.
