Best Calm Water for Families
Lake Johnson (Raleigh)
Lake Johnson is my top recommendation for first-time paddling families. The lake is small, calm, and surrounded by forest. The Lake Johnson Boathouse rents single and tandem kayaks and stand-up paddleboards seasonally (typically April through October).
Rental rates: About $5-8/hour for kayaks. No reservations; first-come, first-served. Details: Lifejackets provided. Kids under a certain age (check current policy) must ride with an adult. Parking and restrooms at the boathouse. No motorized boats allowed, so the water stays calm.
Bond Park Lake (Cary)
Bond Park in Cary rents kayaks, canoes, and paddleboats from the Bond Park Boathouse, open seasonally. The lake is small and protected, perfect for kids. Pedal boats are available too, which are fun for younger kids who might not be ready for paddling.
Rental rates: About $5-8/hour. Details: Lifejackets provided. Restrooms at the park. Parking free.
Lake Crabtree (Morrisville)
Lake Crabtree County Park allows personal kayaks and canoes on the 520-acre lake. The park does not currently offer rentals, so you'll need to bring your own boats. A boat launch area provides easy water access. The lake is large enough for a real paddling adventure but calm enough for families.
Details: Free launch access. No motorized boats. Restrooms at the park.
Shelley Lake (Raleigh)
Shelley Lake is a small urban lake in north Raleigh. Paddle boats and kayaks are available for rent seasonally from the Sertoma Park boathouse area. The lake is tiny and calm, ideal for very young kids or first-timers.
Falls Lake (North Raleigh)
Falls Lake is the biggest paddling destination in the Triangle. The lake has over 12,000 acres, so you can find secluded coves and quiet inlets away from motorized boats. Several recreation areas have boat launches. Beaverdam and Sandling Beach are good options for kayak launches.
Note: Falls Lake allows motorized boats, so stick to quieter coves and inlets with young kids. Wear lifejackets at all times. Day-use fee: $7 per vehicle.
River Paddling
Eno River
The Eno River is a popular paddling destination for families with some experience. The river is shallow and gentle in most sections, with occasional mild rapids (Class I). Canoes are more popular than kayaks here because of the rocky bottom.
Put-in/Take-out: The stretch from West Point on the Eno to Fews Ford is about 3 miles and takes 2-3 hours at a relaxed pace. You'll need two cars (or a shuttle) for a point-to-point trip.
Best for: Families with kids ages 6+ who are comfortable in a canoe. Not recommended for very young children due to the mild rapids and need to navigate around rocks.
Haw River
The Haw River south of the Triangle offers longer paddling trips through beautiful countryside. The section managed by Haw River Canoe and Kayak Company in Saxapahaw (about 45 minutes west) offers rentals and shuttle service.
Rental rates: About $30-50 per canoe/kayak with shuttle.
