One of the reasons I love raising kids in the Triangle is that outdoor fun is free 365 days a year. We do not have to wait for summer β every season has something great, and almost none of it costs a penny.
Spring (March - May)
Spring is the golden season for free outdoor fun in the Triangle. Everything is blooming and the weather is perfect.
Gardens in Full Bloom
Duke Gardens (420 Anderson St, Durham) β Free. 55 acres of themed gardens at peak beauty in April. The Asiatic arboretum and terraces are jaw-dropping.
JC Raulston Arboretum (4415 Beryl Rd, Raleigh) β Free. 10 acres of rare plants. Their spring plant sale is a huge event.
Coker Arboretum (Cameron Ave, Chapel Hill) β Free. Compact but gorgeous, right on UNC's campus.
NCMA Art Park (2110 Blue Ridge Rd, Raleigh) β Free. 164 acres of trails with massive outdoor sculptures. Spring wildflowers are beautiful here.Spring Nature Programs
Prairie Ridge Ecostation (1671 Gold Star Dr, Raleigh) β Free outdoor science classroom. Spring programs include pond dipping, bird walks, and pollinator gardens.
Eno River State Park Wildflower Hikes β Free ranger-led hikes in April when the wildflowers peak.
Falls Lake Bird Walks β Free monthly bird walks led by volunteers.Summer (June - August)
Summer is splash pad season, and the Triangle delivers with free water play everywhere.

Anderson Point Park (2310 Lake Wheeler Rd, Raleigh) β Free splash pad plus a free playground and fishing pier.
Southern Community Park (1000 Summerfield Crossing, Chapel Hill) β Free splash pad with a great adjacent playground.
Lions Park (Fuquay-Varina) β Free and well-designed for toddlers through age 10.
