What Is Geocaching?
Geocaching is a global treasure hunt where people hide small containers (called "caches") at specific GPS coordinates and post the locations online. Other people use the coordinates to find them. When you find a cache, you sign the logbook inside, and if the cache is big enough, you can trade small trinkets.
Caches come in different sizes:
How to Get Started
1. Download the Geocaching app (free version available) or use geocaching.com on a computer. 2. Create a free account. 3. Search for caches near you. You'll be amazed how many are within a few miles of your home. 4. Navigate to the coordinates. The app provides a compass and distance tracker. 5. Find the cache. This is the fun part. It could be hidden under a rock, in a hollow tree, behind a sign, or in a magnetic container on a lamp post. 6. Sign the log, trade items if applicable, and log your find in the app.
Best Geocaching Locations in the Triangle
Umstead State Park
With over 5,000 acres of forest, Umstead has dozens of caches placed along its trails. Many are rated "easy" and placed near trail junctions, making them perfect for families. The combination of a nature hike and a treasure hunt makes Umstead a geocaching paradise.
American Tobacco Trail
The ATT has caches placed at regular intervals along its 22-mile route. You can bike or walk from cache to cache, making a game of seeing how many you can find in one outing. These tend to be easy finds placed near the trail edge.
Historic Downtown Raleigh and Durham
Urban geocaching is a different experience. Caches are hidden in plain sight — magnetically attached to benches, tucked behind signs, or hidden in fake rocks near buildings. Downtown Raleigh and Durham both have dense clusters of caches. It's a fun way to explore the city on foot with kids.
Cary Greenways
Cary's extensive greenway system is loaded with geocaches. The Black Creek Greenway and trails around Bond Park are especially popular. Combine your greenway walk with a cache hunt and you've got a guaranteed good time.
Lake Crabtree County Park
Lake Crabtree has several caches along its trails, including some that require a moderate hike. The park's varied terrain (lakeside, forest, open fields) makes for interesting hides.
