The Three NC Aquariums
NC Aquarium at Pine Knoll Shores
Located on Bogue Banks near Atlantic Beach, the Pine Knoll Shores aquarium is the closest to the Triangle and my family's favorite. It focuses on NC freshwater and saltwater ecosystems, from mountain streams to the deep ocean.
Drive time from Raleigh: About 2.5 hours via US-70 East.
Highlights:
Admission: Adults about $13, children (3-12) about $11. Under 3 free. Hours: Typically 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily.
Bonus: After the aquarium, hit the beach. Atlantic Beach and Emerald Isle are minutes away. Pack swimsuits and make it a full beach day.
NC Aquarium at Fort Fisher
Located near Kure Beach on the southern coast, the Fort Fisher aquarium focuses on the Cape Fear River basin and local marine habitats.
Drive time from Raleigh: About 3 hours via I-40 East.
Highlights:
Admission: Similar to Pine Knoll Shores (about $13 adults, $11 children). Hours: 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily.
Bonus: Fort Fisher State Recreation Area has a beach and the Fort Fisher Civil War site is next door (free). Kure Beach is a lovely, less-crowded beach town.
NC Aquarium on Roanoke Island
The Roanoke Island aquarium near Manteo on the Outer Banks is the most remote but arguably the most charming. It focuses on the waters of the Outer Banks, from freshwater sounds to the Gulf Stream.
Drive time from Raleigh: About 3.5-4 hours via US-64 East.
Highlights:
Admission: Similar pricing to other NC aquariums. Hours: 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily.
Bonus: Roanoke Island is home to the Lost Colony outdoor drama (summer), the Elizabethan Gardens, and the Outer Banks beaches are nearby.
Jennette's Pier (Nags Head)
Jennette's Pier is a fishing and education pier operated by the NC Aquariums in Nags Head. It's not a full aquarium, but it has educational exhibits, a touch tank, and aquarium displays at the pier entrance. The real draw is walking out on the 1,000-foot pier itself, watching surfers, and maybe catching a fish.
Admission: About $2 pier walk, $13 for fishing (rod rental available).

My recommendation: Pine Knoll Shores for a straightforward day trip (closest, great aquarium, easy beach access). Fort Fisher if you want a quieter beach experience. Roanoke Island if you're planning a longer Outer Banks visit.
