Best Stroller-Friendly Walks and Trails in the Triangle
Not all trails are stroller-friendly. Tree roots, gravel, and steep hills have ruined more than one of my outings. These are the Triangle trails and walks I can personally confirm work with a standard stroller β no jogging stroller or off-road tires required.
Raleigh
Shelley Lake (North Raleigh)
Shelley Lake has a 2-mile paved loop around the lake. It's flat, wide, and smooth. Parking is free in the lot off Lead Mine Road. The scenery changes with the seasons β you'll see turtles in summer and fall foliage reflected in the water. Restrooms are available at the community center. Best stroller walk in Raleigh, period.Lake Johnson (West Raleigh)
Lake Johnson has a 3-mile paved greenway loop that's mostly flat. The waterfront section is beautiful. There's a boat rental area, a fishing dock, and plenty of benches for snack breaks. Parking at the main lot off Avent Ferry Road. The trail connects to a larger greenway network if you want more distance.Neuse River Greenway
The Neuse River Greenway stretches 28 miles from Falls Lake to the Johnston County line. Nearly all of it is paved and flat. The section from Anderson Point Park south is scenic and well-maintained. Watch for cyclists β stay right and you're fine.Dorothea Dix Park
Dorothea Dix Park isn't a trail per se, but the paved paths through the grounds are wide, flat, and stroller-perfect. The views of the downtown skyline are the best in the city. The Big Field is great for spreading a blanket after your walk.Durham
American Tobacco Trail
The American Tobacco Trail is a rail-trail that runs from downtown Durham south toward Apex. The northern sections are paved and flat. The trailhead near Southpoint Mall has good parking. The section through the Duke Forest area is shaded and beautiful.Duke East Campus
The Duke East Campus loop is about a mile of flat, paved sidewalk through a gorgeous quad with old-growth trees. Low car traffic, benches everywhere, and the Nasher Museum is right there if you want to pop inside. Free to walk anytime.Ellerbe Creek Trail (Durham)
Ellerbe Creek Trail runs from North Duke Street to Northgate Park. It's about 2 miles, paved, and follows a stream. The creek section is shaded and peaceful. Connects to several parks along the way.Cary and Chapel Hill
Fred G. Bond Metro Park (Cary)
Bond Park has multiple paved trails. The Lake Trail loop is about 2 miles, flat, and smooth. The boathouse area has restrooms and water fountains. On weekday mornings, you'll share the trail mostly with other parents and retirees.Black Creek Greenway (Cary)
Black Creek Greenway connects Bond Park to other Cary parks with 7+ miles of paved trail. The section from Bond Park to North Cary Park is particularly scenic. Bridges and boardwalks over wetlands add visual interest.Chapel Hill Greenways
Chapel Hill has several short greenways that are stroller-friendly. The Bolin Creek Trail from Umstead Park to MLK Jr. Blvd is about 1.5 miles, paved, and mostly flat. The Fan Branch Trail near Southern Village is another good option. What Makes a Trail "Stroller-Friendly"
Not all "easy" trails work with a stroller. Here's what I look for:
