Best Bakeries and Cookie Shops in the Triangle
Whether it's a Saturday morning croissant run, a birthday cake order, or a after-school cookie reward, our family has strong opinions about Triangle bakeries. We've tested them all β here are the ones that keep us coming back.
Best All-Around Bakeries
La Farm Bakery in Cary is the gold standard. Owner Lionel Vatinet is a French Master Baker, and it shows in every croissant, baguette, and pastry. The pain au chocolat is flaky perfection, and the sandwiches on house-made bread are outstanding. Pastries $3-6, sandwiches $9-13. There's usually a line on Saturday mornings, but it moves quickly. This is the bakery we bring out-of-town guests to.
Guglhupf Bakery in Durham brings a German-European bakery tradition to the Triangle. The pretzels are enormous and perfectly salted, the cakes are elegant, and the bread selection is outstanding. The biergarten out back is a lovely spot for families. Pastries $3-6, bread loaves $5-8.
Boulted Bread in downtown Raleigh focuses on naturally leavened sourdough and pastries. The morning buns are legendary β sweet, flaky, and gone by 10 AM on weekends. The space is small, so we usually grab and go. Pastries $3-5, bread loaves $6-9. Opens early (7 AM weekdays, 8 AM weekends).
Best Cookie Shops
Insomnia Cookies has locations near NC State and UNC, and the novelty of warm cookies delivered (or grabbed late at night) is a hit with older kids. The classic chocolate chunk is our favorite. Cookies $2-3 each, boxes of six $12-15. They bake until late, which is handy after evening activities.
Tiff's Treats delivers warm cookies straight to your door, and every Triangle parent should have them in their back pocket for emergencies (teacher appreciation, last-minute party, rough day that needs cookies). Cookies $2-3 each, delivered warm. Multiple flavors, and they do gift deliveries.
Batch Craft Soda + Creamery at Morgan Street Food Hall makes cookies along with their other treats. Thick, chewy, and oversized. Individual cookies $3-4.
Best Cupcakes
Sugarland on Franklin Street in Chapel Hill has cupcakes that are almost too pretty to eat. The frosting-to-cake ratio is perfect, and they have a rotating selection of creative flavors alongside classics. Individual cupcakes $3.50-5. Also excellent for custom birthday cake orders.
The Cupcake Shoppe in downtown Raleigh's Glenwood South makes some of our favorite cupcakes in the area. The red velvet is a standout, and they have mini cupcakes that are perfect for little kids. Regular cupcakes $3.50-4.50, minis $1.50-2.
