Best Donut Shops in the Triangle
Donut runs are one of our family's favorite weekend traditions. There's something about showing up to a donut shop early on a Saturday morning, watching the kids press their faces against the glass case, and letting them pick exactly what they want. Here are the best donut shops in the Triangle.
Raleigh
Rise Biscuits and Donuts started in Durham and now has multiple Triangle locations. The donuts are fresh, creative, and change seasonally. The biscuit sandwiches are equally excellent (making Rise a breakfast double-threat). Donuts $2-4 each, biscuits $4-7. Our favorites are the crumb cake donut and the seasonal flavors. Arrive before 9 AM on weekends for the best selection.
Duck Donuts has several Raleigh-area locations and offers made-to-order donuts. You choose the coating, topping, and drizzle, which turns ordering into an activity for kids. Watching the donuts come through the machine is mesmerizing. Donuts $2-3 each, half-dozen $10-13. The warm, fresh-from-the-machine donuts are hard to beat.
Krispy Kreme on Peace Street has the iconic "Hot Now" sign that's been calling to Raleigh families for decades. When that sign is lit, the original glazed donut that comes off the line is one of life's simplest pleasures. Donuts $1-2 each, dozens $10-14. Watching the donut conveyor belt through the glass is free entertainment for kids.
Durham
Monuts on W. Chapel Hill Street is Durham's beloved donut shop, and for good reason. The flavors are creative (brown butter, blueberry lemon, seasonal specials) and the quality is a cut above. They also have excellent biscuit sandwiches and coffee. Donuts $3-4 each. They sell out early β we aim for arrival by 8:30 AM on weekends. Limited seating, but the nearby Durham Central Park has benches.
Rise Biscuits and Donuts (Durham original location on Broad Street) is where it all started. Same great donuts and biscuits as the other locations, with the original-location charm.
Cary
Rise has a Cary location on Kildaire Farm Road that's our most frequent stop. Same great quality.
Hursey's Bar-B-Q on N. Dixon Avenue in Burlington (worth the drive from Cary) is famous for serving BBQ with donuts on the side. The donuts are glazed, simple, and unbelievably good. It's a 40-minute drive, but if you're ever heading that direction, stop.
Duck Donuts also has a Cary presence, offering the same made-to-order experience.
Chapel Hill
Brandwein's Bagels in Carrboro isn't technically a donut shop, but their baked goods include donut-like pastries that are worth mentioning. And the bagels are some of the best in the Triangle.
Best Donut Shop Strategies
The Saturday Morning Routine
Our family has this down to a science: 1. Leave the house by 8 AM. Beat the crowds. 2. Let each kid pick two donuts. One to eat there, one for later (the "later" one rarely survives the car ride). 3. Grab coffee for the adults. Most donut shops have decent coffee now. 4. Combine with a park visit. Donuts + playground = perfect Saturday morning.
Donut Birthday Hack
Instead of a traditional birthday cake, order two dozen donuts from your favorite shop and stack them on a tiered stand. Add candles. Kids go absolutely wild for a "donut cake," and it's usually cheaper than a custom cake.
Classic vs. Creative

Donuts are one of the simplest joys in life. Our Saturday mornings wouldn't be the same without them.
