Fall Family Fun in the Triangle: Apple Picking, Pumpkin Patches, and Corn Mazes
Fall in the Triangle is pure magic. The humidity finally breaks, the leaves start turning, and suddenly every farm within 50 miles has something fun happening. This is my favorite season to get out with the kids, and after years of trial and error, I've figured out where to go and when.
Apple Picking
Apple season in North Carolina typically runs from late August through October. The best orchards are in the mountains (about 3-4 hours west), but there are closer options too.
Mountain Orchards (Worth the Day Trip)
Hendersonville is apple country. Sky Top Orchard, Stepp's Hillcrest Orchard, and Justus Orchard are all excellent. Sky Top has the best mountain views, Justus has a great cider bar, and Stepp's has fun activities for little kids.
Apple Hill Orchard near Morganton is less crowded than the Hendersonville orchards and has a great bakery.Pro tip: Call before you drive. Apple varieties ripen at different times, and orchards close to picking once a variety sells out. Weekday mornings are infinitely better than Saturday afternoons.
Closer to Home
Carrigan Farms in Mooresville (about 2 hours) does apple picking in season along with peaches earlier in summer.
Check local farmers markets for NC-grown apples if you don't want to make the drive.Pumpkin Patches
Pumpkin patches typically open in late September and run through Halloween.

September is still hot. Don't expect crisp fall weather until mid-October most years. Layer up for morning farm visits β it can be chilly at 9 a.m. and warm by noon. Bring cash for farm stands and always pack hand wipes. Farm fun is messy fun.
Start checking farm websites and social media in early September for opening dates and hours. The best weekends fill up fast, and some places now require or recommend timed reservations.
