Thanksgiving Weekend Activities in the Triangle
Thanksgiving week in the Triangle is one of my favorite times. School's out, the pace slows down (slightly), and there are a few days where the whole family is together with no homework, no activities, no rushing. Here's how to make the most of the long weekend.
Thanksgiving Day
Turkey Trots
Running before eating is a Triangle Thanksgiving tradition:
Raleigh Turkey Trot β one of the largest in the state, typically starts near Meredith College or a downtown location
Durham Turkey Trot β a popular run through downtown Durham
Cary / Apex area trots pop up each year
Most have a 5K and a 1-mile fun run for kids. Register early β they fill up.Pro tip: Even if you're not a runner, the Turkey Trot atmosphere is fun. Walk the 1-mile with the kids, collect your t-shirt, feel virtuous, and then eat three plates of food guilt-free.
Volunteering
Food Bank of Central & Eastern NC in Raleigh accepts volunteers for Thanksgiving meal distribution
Durham Rescue Mission and other shelters need help with holiday meals
Many churches organize meal deliveries β check your local congregationBlack Friday (Family Edition)
Skip the mall chaos. Here's what we do instead:
Outdoor Adventures
This is prime time for outdoor activities because the weather is usually gorgeous (50s-60s, crisp, clear):
Hike at Umstead State Park β trails are uncrowded because everyone else is at the mall
Jordan Lake for a fall picnic and nature walk
American Tobacco Trail bike ride
Eno River State Park for an easy family hikeStart the Holiday Season
Christmas tree shopping β some farms open the day after Thanksgiving
Hang lights on the house (get it done early and feel ahead of the game all December)
Watch a holiday movie at Alamo Drafthouse β they start running Christmas movies this weekendSaturday After Thanksgiving
Christmas Tree Farms Open
Many Triangle tree farms officially open Thanksgiving weekend:
Jordan Valley Christmas Tree Farm in Raleigh
Sawyer Family Farmstead outside Durham
See our full Christmas Tree Farm guide for more optionsDowntown Holiday Events
Raleigh Winterfest and holiday events start popping up this weekend
Downtown Cary often kicks off holiday festivities
Small Business Saturday β support local Triangle shops and restaurantsSunday: Recovery Day
After a few days of socializing, cooking, and activity, Sunday is for:
Decorating the house for Christmas together
Leftovers β turkey sandwiches are arguably better than the original meal
A family movie marathon (start with the classic holiday films)
Prep for the week β lunches, schedules, the return to routineHosting Out-of-Town Family?
Show off the Triangle to your guests:
NC Museum of Natural Sciences β always free, always impressive to visitors
Durham Food Tour β walk around downtown Durham and eat at local spots
NC State campus tour or Duke Chapel for the college-visit crowd
Historic downtown Apex or Carrboro for walkable small-town charm
Sarah P. Duke Gardens β beautiful even in late NovemberLeftover Turkey Ideas (Because We All Need Them)
Okay, this isn't really an activity guide topic, but I'm a mom blog and I can't help myself:
Turkey pot pie
Turkey and cranberry sandwiches on good bread from a local bakery
Turkey soup with Thanksgiving vegetables
Turkey quesadillas (the kids' favorite)
Give the rest to the dog (kidding, but also, she's been so patient)Making the Weekend Count
Family Games for the Long Weekend
When the extended family is together and you need entertainment:
Cornhole in the backyard (this is the Triangle β every family has a set)
Apples to Apples Junior or Codenames for family game night
Touch football or kickball β classic Thanksgiving Day activity
Jigsaw puzzle β start one Wednesday night, work on it all weekend
Cards β teach the kids poker (with candy chips), Spoons, or RummyFor the Post-Meal Slump
A family walk around the neighborhood (it helps, I promise)
The annual argument about which Christmas movie to watch first
Napping. Just... napping. No shame.
Start assembling a jigsaw puzzle that stays on the table all weekend
Pull out family photo albums and share stories the kids haven't heardThe best Thanksgiving weekends are the ones where you don't overschedule. Pick one or two outings, spend the rest of the time at home together. Play board games, build a fire, take a walk around the neighborhood. The magic of this weekend isn't in the activities β it's in the unscheduled time together. Those are the moments your kids will remember.
