What to Consider When Choosing
Transportation
The #1 logistical issue. Does the program provide pickup from school? If not, who's getting your kid there? Some programs partner with schools for bus service. Others require parent pickup from school and drop-off at the program. Ask specifically about this.Homework Time
If your kid has homework, make sure the program allocates time for it. Coming home at 6pm with homework still to do is a recipe for meltdowns (yours, not theirs).Flexibility
Some programs require 5-day commitments. Others offer 2-3 day options or drop-in availability. Match the schedule to your actual needs.Summer Transition
Many after-school programs also offer summer camps. Consistency in care providers helps kids (and parents) transition smoothly from school year to summer.Cost vs. Value
Basic after-school care: $60-$130/week Enrichment programs: $150-$400/month The difference is whether your child is being watched or being taught something. Both are valid β it depends on your family's needs and budget.Financial Help
The 3-6pm hours don't have to be stressful. With the right program, your kid can be learning, playing, and thriving while you finish your workday. And when you pick them up, they'll actually have something to tell you about their afternoon.
