    Splash Pad Packing List

After hundreds of splash pad visits, here is my perfected packing list:

    Essential

  • Swimsuits (or clothes they can get wet — nobody cares)
  • Water shoes — splash pads have rough surfaces, and creek beds have rocks
  • Sunscreen — apply 30 minutes before arriving, reapply every 2 hours
  • Towels — at least one per person, plus one extra
  • Change of clothes — dry clothes for the car ride home
  • Water bottles — staying hydrated while playing in water is still important
  • Snacks — water play makes kids hungry
  • Nice to Have

  • Swim diapers for babies/toddlers (regular diapers do not work in water)
  • Sun hat for babies
  • Pop-up shade tent for a base camp
  • Waterproof phone case — for photos
  • Ziplock bags — for wet suits after play
  • Skip These

  • Water guns — most splash pads discourage them to keep the peace
  • Inflatable toys — not necessary and can be hazards on splash pad surfaces
  • Heavy coolers — a small insulated bag is enough
  • Splash Pad Etiquette

  • Apply sunscreen before arriving — sunscreen runoff can make splash pad surfaces slippery
  • Swim diapers are required for non-potty-trained kids — regular diapers swell and create a mess
  • Supervise young kids — splash pads are shallow but slippery
  • No running — wet surfaces are slippery
  • Share features — take turns on popular water stations
  • Clean up — take your trash and belongings when you leave
  • Beyond Splash Pads: Free Water Play

    Creek and River Wading

  • Eno River State Park (Durham) — Multiple free wading spots
  • Umstead State Park (Raleigh) — Creeks along several trails
  • New Hope Creek (Chapel Hill/Durham) — Free wading at trail access points
  • Crabtree Creek (Raleigh) — Wading spots along the greenway
  • Lake Play

  • Lake Johnson (Raleigh) — Lakeshore access for gentle water play
  • Bond Park Lake (Cary) — Shoreline access
  • Falls Lake (north Raleigh) — Free at trailhead access points
  • Sprinkler Play

When all else fails: your backyard sprinkler. Free, private, and always available. Add a slip-and-slide ($10 at Walmart) for instant party vibes.

The Triangle's free splash pads are genuinely excellent — clean, well-maintained, and scattered across the region so there is always one nearby. From Memorial Day to Labor Day, they are the single best free activity for families with young kids. Use them every chance you get.
