Library summer reading programs are the backbone of free summer:
How It Works
1. Register (free) at any Triangle library branch in early June
2. Track reading throughout summer
3. Earn free prizes at milestones (books, small toys, event tickets)
4. Attend free weekly special events (magicians, animal shows, science demonstrations)
5. Culminating celebration at the end of summer
Why It Matters
Prevents summer reading loss (a real academic issue)
Provides structure to summer weeks
Free books and prizes
Free special events that are often excellent qualityBudget for the Whole Summer
Here is what 12 weeks of free summer costs us in actual spending:
Sunscreen: $15 (one large bottle lasts the summer)
Bug spray: $8
Sidewalk chalk, bubbles, water balloons: $10
Science experiment supplies: $10
Occasional treats (ice cream, snoballs): $40 over the summer
Gas for driving to activities: $50-75Total summer entertainment budget: approximately $130-160 for 12 weeks of daily activities.
Compare that to day camp costs ($200-400 per week per child) and the savings are staggering.
The Sanity Factor
Free does not mean unstructured. The key to a happy free summer is:
1.Plan each week on Sunday β even loosely
2.Alternate active and quiet days β burnout is real for everyone
3.Build in rest days β not every day needs an outing
4.Let kids be bored sometimes β boredom breeds creativity
5.Involve kids in planning β let them choose one activity each week
6.Accept imperfection β some days the plan falls apart. That is fine.
Summer in the Triangle can be the best twelve weeks of the year without costing more than gas and sunscreen. I have done it for years. My kids look forward to summer more than Christmas. That is the goal.
