Best Brunch Spots with Kids in Raleigh-Durham

Weekend brunch with kids is an art form. You need food that arrives fast, a menu that satisfies both adult cravings and child pickiness, and an atmosphere where nobody raises an eyebrow at spilled juice. We've perfected our brunch rotation over years of trial and error.

Raleigh Brunch Spots

Big Ed's City Market in downtown Raleigh is a Triangle brunch legend. This place has been serving massive Southern breakfasts since 1958, and the atmosphere is pure country charm — hanging bicycles, vintage signs, and friendly staff who call everyone "hon." The biscuits are the size of your fist and the grits are perfect. Kids love the pancakes. Expect a line on Saturdays (20-40 minutes), but it moves. Cash only! Meals $7-12 per person.

Irregardless Cafe does a jazz brunch on weekends that sounds like it wouldn't work with kids — but it does. The live music actually keeps little ones entertained, the menu is excellent, and the staff has been handling families at brunch for decades. Reservations strongly recommended. Adult entrees $14-22, kids meals $7-9.

First Watch has multiple Raleigh locations and is our reliable go-to. The menu has creative options for adults (avocado toast, power bowls) and simple options for kids (pancakes, eggs, fruit). No dinner service means they focus entirely on doing breakfast and lunch really well. Most meals $10-14. Crayons and coloring sheets provided. Usually a 10-20 minute wait on weekend mornings.

Flying Biscuit Cafe in North Hills is another strong option. The cranberry-apple butter they serve with their biscuits is addictive, and the kids menu is solid. Similar vibe to First Watch but with a Southern twist. Meals $10-16.

Durham Brunch Spots

Elmo's Diner on Ninth Street is our #1 Durham brunch pick. Breakfast served all day, enormous portions, and a kids menu that actually has variety. The pancakes can feed two kids easily. We arrive before 9 AM or prepare for a 30+ minute wait. Meals $8-14.

Dame's Chicken and Waffles technically serves brunch all day because their entire concept is brunch food. The kids chicken and waffle plate is perfectly sized, and the adult portions are enormous. Weekend waits can be 20-30 minutes. Meals $10-16.

Guglhupf Bakery, Cafe & Biergarten in Durham brings a German-European flair to brunch. The pastries are outstanding (the pretzel alone is worth the trip), the brunch menu is creative, and the outdoor biergarten space is surprisingly kid-friendly. Entrees $12-18, pastries $3-6.

Parker and Otis near Brightleaf Square has a gourmet deli feel with excellent sandwiches and baked goods. It's more of a counter-service spot, which means faster food and less formality. Sandwiches $9-13, baked goods $3-5.

Cary & Chapel Hill

La Farm Bakery in Cary is our weekend pastry ritual. The croissants, quiche, and tartines are phenomenal. It's counter-service, so you're eating quickly. Pair it with a park visit for the perfect Saturday morning.

Weaver Street Market in Carrboro is the ultimate no-stress brunch. Grab prepared food from the counter, sit on the lawn, and let the kids run. The breakfast burritos are surprisingly good. Budget $8-12 per person.

Brunch With Kids: Our Tips

  • Make a reservation if possible. Many brunch spots now take them, and it saves you from the "wait with hungry kids" nightmare.
  • Arrive at opening. First seating (usually 8 or 9 AM) means no wait and fresher food.
  • Order kids food first. Ask the server to fire the kids meals immediately. Fed kids = patient kids.
  • Bring a small activity. A coloring book or quiet toy buys you 10 precious minutes of adult conversation.
  • Share a pastry appetizer. If there's going to be a wait for food, a muffin or biscuit keeps everyone calm.
