Best Candy and Sweet Shops Kids Love in the Triangle
There's something magical about a candy store β the colors, the jars, the excitement of choosing exactly what you want. The Triangle has some wonderful sweet shops that make candy buying an experience, not just a purchase.
Chocolate Shops
Videri Chocolate Factory in Raleigh's Warehouse District is our top pick for a family chocolate experience. It's a working chocolate factory with a retail shop, so kids can watch chocolate being made through glass windows. The hot chocolate is rich and incredible ($4-5), the chocolate bars are beautiful ($6-10), and the space smells amazing. Free to visit and watch the production. Located near other Warehouse District spots, making it easy to combine with a downtown Raleigh outing.
Escazu Artisan Chocolates in Raleigh's Five Points neighborhood makes bean-to-bar chocolate with stunning craftsmanship. The truffles ($2-4 each) are works of art, and the drinking chocolate is one of the best in the Triangle. Chocolate bars $8-12. It's a smaller shop, so it's more of a quick stop than a hangout.
Kilwin's in downtown Cary on W. Chatham Street is a classic candy and chocolate shop. Hand-dipped chocolates, fudge made in-house, and caramel apples that kids press their noses against the glass to watch being made. The shop smells like heaven. Fudge $5-8 per piece, chocolates $2-5 each. They also have ice cream (scoops $4-6).
Old-Fashioned Candy Stores
Rocket Fizz (if available in the Triangle, check for pop-up or permanent locations) carries thousands of nostalgic candies, novelty sodas, and gag gifts. Kids are mesmerized by the wall of candy options, and parents get hit with pure nostalgia. Most candies $1-5.
Cracker Barrel (multiple locations) β hear us out. The front gift shop of every Cracker Barrel has an old-fashioned candy section with penny candy, rock candy sticks, and nostalgic sweets. It's not a dedicated candy store, but kids love browsing before or after a meal. Candies $1-5.
Party City and Five Below β Not glamorous, but the bulk candy sections at these stores scratch the candy-store itch for kids who just want to choose their own candy. Affordable too.
Specialty Sweet Shops
Sugarland on Franklin Street in Chapel Hill is a charming sweet shop with cupcakes, cakes, and candy. The cupcakes are the star ($3.50-5), but the candy selection is fun for kids to browse. The space is cute and Instagram-worthy.
Nothing Bundt Cakes has Triangle locations and specializes in bundtlet cakes (individual bundt cakes) that are rich, moist, and topped with cream cheese frosting. Individual cakes $4-6. They make great party favors and celebration treats.
IT'SUGAR (if available at local malls) carries oversized candy, novelty sweets, and gummy everything. Kids lose their minds here. Prices vary widely ($2-25+).
Where to Get Sweet Treats at Events
Many Triangle events and festivals have candy and sweet vendors:
Making the Candy Store an Event
We've found that the candy store works best as a planned outing rather than an impulse stop:
1. Set a budget before you go. "$5 to spend" gives kids agency without bankruptcy. 2. Let them take their time. Half the fun is looking and deciding. 3. Buy one thing to eat now, one thing for later. Extends the excitement. 4. Combine with another activity. Candy store + park visit = perfect afternoon. 5. Use it as a reward. "After we finish errands, we'll stop at the candy shop" is powerful motivation.
Sweet Shop Birthday Party Hack
Several candy and chocolate shops will arrange birthday party experiences:
These are unique alternatives to the standard pizza-party-at-a-venue birthday.
