Best Coffee Shops with Play Areas in the Triangle
Every parent knows the dream: hot coffee, a comfortable seat, and kids happily entertained nearby. The Triangle has a growing number of coffee shops that cater to families, some with dedicated play areas and others with an atmosphere that just works with kids.
Dedicated Play Cafes
Kidzu Children's Museum in Chapel Hill has a cafe area where parents can grab coffee and snacks while kids explore the museum. It's not a standalone coffee shop, but the combination of museum admission ($10-12 per person) and a decent latte makes it our go-to rainy-day option. The coffee is simple but serviceable.
Play MorΓ© in Wake Forest combines a full coffee bar with an indoor play space. This is the model more Triangle families want β real espresso drinks (lattes $4-6) alongside a clean, well-maintained play area for toddlers and preschoolers. Play sessions run about $10-15 per child. The coffee is from a local roaster and genuinely good.
Coffee Shops With Kid-Friendly Vibes
Raleigh
Jubala Coffee on Hillsborough Street has a spacious, bright interior and outdoor seating area. While there's no dedicated play area, the space is open enough for strollers, and the staff is genuinely welcoming to families. The lattes are excellent ($5-6), and they have a solid food menu with pastries and sandwiches ($4-9). Our kids love the steamed milk "kid's lattes."
Heirloom Brewshop on S. Person Street combines tea and coffee with a community-focused space. They host family-friendly events and the relaxed atmosphere means kids aren't out of place. Drinks $4-7.
Black & White Coffee on Glenwood Avenue has comfortable seating and enough space that it doesn't feel cramped with a stroller. The iced lavender latte is our favorite. Drinks $4-7, pastries $3-5.
Durham
Cocoa Cinnamon on Geer Street is a Durham favorite with a quirky, colorful atmosphere that kids find fascinating. The hot chocolate is outstanding (made with real chocolate), and the pastry selection rotates regularly. Drinks $4-7. The Geer Street location has more space than the Lakewood location for families.
Foster Street Coffee in the Durham Innovation District has a clean, modern space with good natural light. It's right near the Durham Food Hall, so you can combine a coffee run with lunch. Drinks $4-6.
Cary
Morning Times in downtown Cary has comfortable indoor seating and a relaxed vibe. The breakfast menu is solid if you need food along with your coffee. Drinks $4-6, food $6-10.
Chapel Hill
Open Eye Cafe on Weaver Street in Carrboro is a community institution. The space is cozy (not huge for strollers), but the proximity to the Weaver Street Market lawn means you can grab your coffee and head outside where kids can run free. Drinks $4-6.
Making Coffee Shops Work With Kids
Since most coffee shops don't have dedicated play areas, here are our strategies:
The Coffee + Park Combo
Our favorite strategy is pairing a coffee shop with a nearby park:
