We have more free museums and learning institutions than most metropolitan areas twice our size. Here are the best educational field trips by subject area.
Science and Nature
NC Museum of Natural Sciences (Raleigh)
NC Museum of Natural Sciences is the most-visited natural history museum in the Southeast, and it's free. The main building covers North Carolina ecology, paleontology, and zoology. The Nature Research Center has working research labs and live science demos. Best for ages 4 and up. Plan 2-3 hours. Homeschool groups can book guided programs at reduced rates.NC Museum of Life and Science (Durham)
NC Museum of Life and Science covers space, weather, engineering, and wildlife. The outdoor exhibits include a dinosaur trail, farmyard, and butterfly house. The indoor Aerospace exhibit has a real Mercury space capsule. Admission is around $20 but memberships pay for themselves in two visits. Best for ages 3-12.Morehead Planetarium (Chapel Hill)

NC Museum of History (Raleigh)

Howling Cow at NC State's dairy farm offers guided tours showing how ice cream is made from the university's own cows. Tours are by reservation and popular with school groups.
