Best Kid-Friendly Restaurants in Chapel Hill
Chapel Hill has a special charm for family dining β the college-town energy means most restaurants are used to a lively crowd, and the local food scene punches well above its weight for a town this size. We split our time between Franklin Street classics and Carrboro hidden gems.
Franklin Street & Downtown
Sup Dogs on Franklin Street is a college spot that doubles as a perfect family restaurant. Hot dogs and burgers with creative toppings, a casual atmosphere where nobody cares about noise, and prices that won't break the bank. Kids meals $5-7, adult meals $8-12. It gets packed on game days, so check the UNC schedule.
Mediterranean Deli on Franklin Street is one of our all-time favorites. The buffet-style setup means kids can see exactly what they're getting (huge win for picky eaters), and the hummus, falafel, and pita are universally loved by our crew. Buffet is around $12-14 per pound, but a child's plate usually runs $6-8. The baklava is a must for dessert ($3).
Panciuto β wait, wrong vibe. Let's talk about Al's Burger Shack on Franklin Street instead. This tiny burger joint has been named one of the best burgers in America, and while the space is small, the quality is worth the squeeze. Burgers $7-11, add fries for $3. Not ideal for strollers (it's tight), but older kids love it. Cash only last we checked, but verify before you go.
Carrboro
Acme Food & Beverage in downtown Carrboro is our top pick for a nicer family dinner. The food is locally sourced, the atmosphere is upscale-casual, and they've always been gracious with our kids. The chicken is outstanding, and kids can usually find pasta or a burger on the menu. Adult entrees $18-28, but the quality justifies it. Reservations recommended on weekends.
Weaver Street Market is technically a grocery store/co-op, but the prepared food counter and huge outdoor lawn make it one of the best family dining spots in the area. Grab sandwiches, pizza, or salad from the deli ($7-12), spread a blanket on the lawn, and let the kids run around. Live music on some evenings. Free outdoor seating. This is our Sunday afternoon ritual.
Armadillo Grill in Carrboro is a walk-up taco window that kids think is the coolest thing ever. Order at the window, grab a table, and enjoy some of the best street-style tacos in the Triangle. Tacos $3-4 each, burritos $7-9. Very casual, very kid-friendly.
Near Campus But Family-Appropriate
Kipos Greek Taverna on Franklin Street has a beautiful covered patio and a menu that's more accessible for kids than you'd think. The lamb meatballs and flatbreads are perfect for sharing, and the hummus plate keeps little ones happy while adults enjoy their meal. Adult entrees $15-24, sharing plates $8-14. High chairs available.
Bandido's near Eastgate has enormous burritos and a brightly colored, fun interior. Kids love the quesadillas ($5-6), and the salsa bar lets everyone customize. Budget $30-40 for a family of four.
Sweet Treat Stops
Maple View Farm Ice Cream on Dairy Road (technically Hillsborough, but close enough) is worth the short drive. It's a real working dairy farm with picnic tables, farm views, and ice cream made from their own milk. Scoops $3-5. Seasonal hours, so check before you go. The experience of eating ice cream on a farm is something kids remember.
Sugarland on Franklin Street has cupcakes, cakes, and sweets in a charming little shop. Cupcakes $3-5. Perfect for a post-dinner treat or a special occasion stop.
