Best Mexican Restaurants for Families in the Triangle
Mexican food is maybe the most universally kid-friendly cuisine. Chips and salsa buy you 10 minutes of peace, quesadillas satisfy even the pickiest eater, and beans and rice are cheap sides that fill little bellies. The Triangle has an incredible range of Mexican restaurants, from authentic taquerias to Tex-Mex chains. Here are our family favorites.
Raleigh
Gonza Tacos y Tequila on Glenwood Avenue is our go-to for a fun family Mexican dinner. The tacos are creative and delicious (the fish tacos are outstanding), the atmosphere is lively, and the kids menu is solid with quesadillas and chicken tenders. Budget $35-50 for a family of four. High chairs available. The noise level is high enough that kids blend right in.
Centro on Fayetteville Street downtown has a rooftop patio that's great for families during early dinner (before it becomes more of a bar scene). The guacamole made tableside is a show that entertains kids, and the enchiladas are excellent. Slightly upscale, $40-60 for a family of four.
Taqueria El Toro on Capital Boulevard is our pick for authentic, no-frills Mexican food. The tacos al pastor are incredible, the menu is in Spanish and English, and a family of four can eat well for $25-30. It's a no-frills space, which means nobody cares about crumbs. Cash and card accepted.
Durham
Cosmic Cantina on Ninth Street is a Durham legend for quick, cheap burritos. Counter service, no reservations needed, and burritos the size of your forearm for about $7. Kids quesadillas around $4. It's fast, it's good, and it's impossible to overspend here.
Torchy's Tacos near Southpoint has a fun, colorful atmosphere and a menu that offers something for everyone. The Queso is famous for good reason. Budget $30-40 for a family of four. High chairs and booster seats available.
Taqueria La Vaquita on Guess Road is a hidden gem for authentic tacos. The meat is seasoned perfectly, the tortillas are fresh, and the prices are incredibly fair ($2-3 per taco). It's a simple spot, but the food speaks for itself.
Cary
Torero's Mexican Restaurant on Kildaire Farm Road is our Cary Mexican standby. Enormous portions, an extensive kids menu ($5-7), and servers who are genuinely great with little ones. The chips and salsa are unlimited and arrive the moment you sit down. Budget $30-40 for a family of four. We've never waited more than 10 minutes.
Guasaca on Kildaire Farm Road does Venezuelan-style arepas and bowls, not strictly Mexican, but it scratches a similar itch. The build-your-own format is perfect for families. Counter service, meals $8-11 per person.
Chapel Hill
Armadillo Grill in Carrboro is a walk-up taco window that's simple and excellent. Tacos $3-4 each, burritos $7-9. Eat at the outdoor picnic tables. Kids love the novelty of ordering at a window.
Bandido's near Eastgate has been feeding Chapel Hill families for years. The portions are enormous, the salsa bar is fun for kids to customize, and the prices are fair. Budget $30-40 for a family of four.
Taco Trucks Worth Finding
