Cary Neighborhoods
Amberly
One of Cary's newer master-planned communities in the western part of town. Amberly has everything: a huge clubhouse with a resort-style pool, splash pad, fitness center, walking trails, and a dedicated events coordinator who plans movie nights, food truck rodeos, and holiday parties. Homes range from $450K-$800K. Zoned for top-rated Hortons Creek Elementary and Green Hope High School. This is the neighborhood where you'll see kids biking to the pool on summer afternoons.
Preston
The grande dame of Cary communities. Preston is centered around a golf course with multiple pools, tennis courts, miles of trails, and beautiful mature landscaping. Homes range from $500K-$1.2M+. The swim team alone has hundreds of kids. Zoned for Davis Drive Elementary and Panther Creek High School. If you want a "country club without the membership" vibe, Preston is your spot.
Lochmere
A classic Cary neighborhood near Regency Park. More established (built in the 80s-90s), which means bigger lots and mature trees but older homes. A lakeside clubhouse, pool, and active HOA make it feel like a community rather than just a subdivision. Homes run $350K-$650K. Walking distance to the Lochmere Golf Club and close to Cary Towne Center area dining.
Carpenter Village / Park West Village
For families who want a walkable "town center" feel, Park West Village has shops, restaurants, a movie theater, and mixed-use living right in the neighborhood. Carpenter Village is a new-urbanist community with front porches, narrow streets, and a real neighborhood identity. Homes in this area range from $400K-$700K.
Apex Neighborhoods
Apex won "Best Place to Live in America" from Money Magazine, and families are a big reason why. It's slightly more affordable than Cary with the same school system (Wake County) and a charming historic downtown.
Scotts Mill
A popular swim-and-tennis neighborhood on the Apex/Cary border. Scotts Mill has a huge community pool, playground, and walking trails. Active HOA that organizes events throughout the year. Homes range from $400K-$650K. Zoned for good schools and close to everything on Highway 55.
Bella Casa / Heritage at Amberly
Newer construction in the Apex/Holly Springs corridor. Bella Casa has a gorgeous clubhouse and pool complex. Heritage at Amberly (not to be confused with Cary's Amberly) offers similar amenities. Homes from $375K-$600K. The trade-off is being farther from downtown Apex, but you're close to the growing commercial areas along Highway 55.
Historic Downtown Apex
A handful of families live right in the walkable downtown, with homes ranging from renovated bungalows to new infill construction ($350K-$700K). You can walk to the Apex Farmers Market, Salem Street Pub, and the Halle Cultural Arts Center. The annual Peak City Pig Fest BBQ competition is a highlight. School zones vary, so check specific addresses.
Cary and Apex: The Family Infrastructure
What really sets these towns apart for families:
Cost Comparison
Cary is generally 10-15% more expensive than Apex for equivalent homes. Both are pricier than most of Raleigh (comparable to North Raleigh) and significantly more than Durham. Property taxes in Wake County are reasonable compared to Northern states.
HOA fees typically run $100-$300/month for communities with pools and amenities. Budget for this — it's a fact of life in planned communities.
The Bottom Line
If your family priorities are schools, safety, community amenities, and convenience, Cary and Apex should be at the top of your list. They may lack the "cool factor" of downtown Durham or the history of Chapel Hill, but for the day-to-day reality of raising kids? They're hard to beat. And there's nothing stopping you from driving 20 minutes to Durham for date night tacos.
