Best Restaurants for Picky Eaters in the Triangle
If you have a picky eater, you know the anxiety that comes with every restaurant trip. Will there be anything on the menu they'll eat? Will we end up buying an $8 kids meal that gets two bites? We have a seriously selective eater in our family, and over the years we've found the restaurants that work β even for the kid who only eats five things.
The "Safe Bet" Restaurants
These restaurants have menus so broad that even the pickiest eater will find something:
Char-Grill (multiple Raleigh locations) β Plain burger, plain fries. Done. No weird sauces, no unexpected flavors, just simple food done well. Under $8 per person. Our picky eater's #1 restaurant.
Cook Out (multiple Triangle locations) β The menu is enormous, and everything is simple. Plain burger, plain hot dog, chicken nuggets, fries, hush puppies, grilled cheese. Plus 40+ milkshake flavors. Under $7 per person.
Mellow Mushroom (multiple locations) β Cheese pizza is the universal picky-eater food, and Mellow Mushroom does it well. But they also have simple pastas, pretzels with cheese, and a calzone that's basically just bread and cheese. Large cheese pizza $16-18.
IHOP/Denny's (multiple locations) β Breakfast-for-dinner is a picky-eater power move. Pancakes, plain eggs, bacon, toast β all safe foods. And the smiley-face pancake plate is designed specifically for the under-10 crowd. Meals $7-12.
Build-Your-Own Restaurants
Restaurants where kids control exactly what goes on their plate are gold for picky eaters:
Guasaca (Cary) β Build-your-own arepas and bowls. Choose your protein, skip any scary toppings, add only what you want. Rice and chicken with nothing else? Totally fine. Meals $8-11.
Moe's Southwest Grill (multiple locations) β Build-your-own burritos, bowls, and tacos. A plain cheese quesadilla with a side of rice is a perfectly acceptable order. Kids meals $5-7.
Subway (everywhere) β We're not too proud to admit that Subway has saved many a family outing. The visual build-your-own format lets picky eaters see exactly what's going on, and "just bread and cheese" is a valid order.
The "Plain Pasta" Strategy
Many Italian restaurants will make a simple plate of buttered noodles or plain pasta with parmesan, even if it's not on the menu. We've had good luck asking at:
Food Halls: The Secret Weapon
Food halls are a picky eater's best friend because there are multiple options under one roof:
Transfer Co. Food Hall (Raleigh) β If they won't eat what one vendor has, walk 20 feet to another. Usually at least one vendor has plain food.
Morgan Street Food Hall (Raleigh) β Same concept, even more options. Pizza, burgers, fries, and chicken tenders are all available from different vendors.
Tips for Dining With Picky Eaters
1. Check the menu online before you go. Know there's something safe before you commit. 2. Bring a backup. A Ziploc bag of Goldfish crackers in your bag is not giving up β it's smart parenting. 3. Don't make it a battle. Forcing a picky eater to try something at a restaurant leads to meltdowns, not breakthroughs. 4. Order the safe food plus one "try" bite. "You're getting your nuggets, but can you try one bite of this?" Low pressure. 5. Separate the components. Many picky eaters won't eat a burger but will eat the bun, then the meat, then the lettuce separately. 6. Praise adventurous bites without making a huge deal. "Oh, you tried the rice? Cool." Move on. 7. Talk to the server. Most family restaurants are used to modifications. "Plain burger, no toppings, no sauce" is a completely normal request.
