Best Children's Museums and Science Centers in the Triangle
The Triangle is blessed with children's museums and science centers that rival cities twice our size. Here is a head-to-head comparison so you can decide which ones deserve your family's time and money.
The Big Three
Marbles Kids Museum (Raleigh)
Marbles in downtown Raleigh is the Triangle's flagship children's museum. Two floors of interactive exhibits cover everything from a pretend grocery store to a construction zone to a music studio. The IMAX theater is a fantastic add-on.Museum of Life and Science (Durham)
The Museum of Life and Science is the Triangle's other major children's science destination. It combines indoor exhibits with extensive outdoor areas including a butterfly house, a train ride, a dinosaur trail, farmyard, and a large playground. This is a full-day destination.Kidzu Children's Museum (Chapel Hill)
Kidzu at University Place is smaller than Marbles but beautifully designed for younger children. Exhibits focus on creative play, including a maker space, a nature play area, and a music room.Other Science and Discovery Centers
Morehead Planetarium and Science Center (Chapel Hill)
Morehead at UNC is a planetarium with science exhibits. The dome shows are excellent and age-appropriate options exist for kids as young as 4. Admission is $8-11 per person. Shows last about 45 minutes. Pair with a walk around the UNC campus for a great outing.NC Museum of Natural Sciences (Raleigh)
Technically a state museum rather than a children's museum, but the NC Museum of Natural Sciences is absolutely essential for families. Free admission, live animal exhibits, dinosaur skeletons, and the Nature Research Center with hands-on labs. See the Free Museums guide for full details.Side-by-Side Comparison

Membership Strategy
Here is how to maximize your museum memberships:
1. Start with Museum of Life and Science. Their ASTC membership gets you free or discounted admission at 300+ science centers when traveling. 2. Add Marbles if you visit more than 4 times per year. Their ACM membership works at other children's museums nationally. 3. Add Kidzu if you have children under 5 and live in Orange County or western Durham. 4. Do not buy all three at once. Rotate memberships year to year to keep things fresh.
How to Choose for a Single Visit
If you are visiting the Triangle and can only pick one:
Under age 3: Kidzu. The right scale, gentle sensory experiences, and age-appropriate exhibits.
Ages 3-7: Marbles. The variety of exhibits means something clicks for every kid in this age range.
Ages 5-12: Museum of Life and Science. The outdoor areas, live animals, and science activities are unbeatable for this age group.
Teens: NC Museum of Natural Sciences (free) for the Nature Research Center and live labs.
Any age, nice weather: Museum of Life and Science wins hands down. The outdoor experience is the best family destination in the Triangle.
