Best Christmas Light Displays in the Triangle
I have a theory that Christmas lights are even more magical when it's 55 degrees and you can actually stand outside comfortably to enjoy them. That's the Triangle advantage. Here are the best places to see holiday lights each year.
Big Ticketed Events
WRAL Nights of Lights β Raleigh
Held at Dix Park (or a similar large venue β check the current year's location), this is the Triangle's biggest drive-through light display. Millions of lights synchronized to music you tune into on your car radio. It typically runs from late November through early January.
Pro tip: Go on a weeknight. Weekend waits can be over an hour. Tuesday and Wednesday are the sweet spot.
North Carolina Chinese Lantern Festival β Cary
Held at Koka Booth Amphitheatre each year, typically from late November through mid-January. These aren't your standard Christmas lights β they're massive, handcrafted silk lanterns depicting animals, pagodas, and scenes. Absolutely stunning and unlike anything else in the area.
What to know: Buy tickets online in advance. It's walking-only (no cars). Dress warm β you'll be outside for an hour or more. Weeknight tickets are cheaper and less crowded.
Holiday Express β Spencer
About 90 minutes west, the NC Transportation Museum runs a holiday train ride with lights and decorations. It's a fun day trip, especially for train-loving kids. Book early β it sells out.
Free Neighborhood Displays
Some of the best light displays are in local neighborhoods, put up by dedicated families:
Raleigh Area
Durham/Chapel Hill Area
Pro tip: Neighborhoods are best on weeknights. Cruise slowly, turn off your headlights when parked, and be respectful of residents.
Downtown Displays
Holiday Light Trails and Gardens
DIY Christmas Light Tour
Here's my family's favorite tradition: load up the car with hot cocoa and cookies, make a playlist of holiday music, and drive a loop hitting multiple spots in one evening. Our route:
1. Start with downtown Raleigh (Fayetteville Street) 2. Drive to a nearby decorated neighborhood 3. End at a drive-through light show
The whole thing takes about 2 hours and costs nothing (or just the price of drive-through tickets). Kids rate each display, and we pick a winner. It's honestly one of our favorite holiday traditions.
