Best Day Trips from Raleigh-Durham with Kids
Day trips are the sweet spot of family travel: adventure without packing overnight bags. Leave in the morning, come home for bedtime. Here are the best ones from the Triangle, tested by a family that's done every one of them.
Under 1 Hour
North Carolina Zoo β Asheboro (~1 hour)
The world's largest natural habitat zoo, and it's right here in NC. The Africa and North America sections are both excellent. Plan for a full day β it's a lot of walking.Tips: Arrive when gates open. Start with the Africa side (it's the bigger draw). Bring a stroller even for older kids who "don't need one" β they will. Pack lunch to save time and money.
Lazy 5 Ranch β Mooresville (~1.5 hours, but worth it)
A drive-through safari where animals come right up to your car. Giraffes, zebras, bison, and more. You buy a bucket of feed and roll down the windows. Kids go absolutely bonkers. There's also a petting zoo area.Tips: Bring an old towel for car cleanup. Ostrich beaks are aggressive β guard your bucket. The drive-through takes about an hour; budget time for the petting area too.
Sylvan Heights Bird Park β Scotland Neck (~1.5 hours east)
A hidden gem. Walk through aviaries, feed birds from your hand, and see species from around the world. Rarely crowded, very affordable, and kids who love animals will be in heaven.Historic Bath β Bath, NC (~1.5 hours east)
North Carolina's oldest town (founded 1705). Free historic site tours, waterfront views, and a taste of colonial history. Pair with a stop at a roadside produce stand on the way home.1-2 Hours
North Carolina Aquarium at Pine Knoll Shores (~2 hours east)
One of three NC aquariums, this one is on the coast near Atlantic Beach. Sharks, sea turtles, river otters, and touch tanks. Pair with an afternoon at nearby Fort Macon State Park beach (free) for a full day.Korner's Folly β Kernersville (~1.5 hours west)
The strangest house in America β built in the 1880s with rooms at different levels, tiny doors, full-size theater, and whimsical design. Kids are fascinated by the architecture. Tours are available by reservation.Bennett Place / Duke Homestead β Durham (Local but trip-worthy)
For history-loving families, these sites tell the story of the Civil War's end in NC and the tobacco industry. Free, educational, and good for a couple of hours.Seasonal Day Trips
Apple Picking in Hendersonville (~3 hours west, but worth it in fall)
During September and October, the mountain orchards around Hendersonville offer a perfect day trip. Leave early, pick apples at Sky Top Orchard or Justus Orchard, grab lunch in downtown Hendersonville, and drive home full of apples and mountain air.Strawberry Picking (Local, spring)
Late April through May, local farms open for U-pick strawberries. It's a quick, affordable outing that kids love. Several farms within 30 minutes of the Triangle participate.Beach Day (Summer)
Wrightsville Beach or Carolina Beach are about 2 hours east. Leave by 7 a.m., set up by 9, enjoy the beach until 2 or 3, drive home. Tired, sandy kids fall asleep in the car. Perfect day.Educational Day Trips
