Earth Day 2026 in the Triangle: Activities & Events for Families

Earth Day falls on Wednesday, April 22 this year, and honestly? The Triangle treats it like a whole season, not just a single day. Between cleanups, festivals, nature walks, and kid-friendly eco events, there's so much happening the entire last week of April. I've pulled together the best options so you can make the most of it — whether you want a big festival experience or a low-key nature morning with the kids.

The Big Events

Earth Yay! — The Great Raleigh Cleanup (April 18)

This is one of my favorites and it's a two-parter. Start the morning with a community cleanup in and around Coastal Credit Union Music Park, then stick around for the Earth Day Fair from 12–4 PM with eco-vendors, live music, and kid activities. It's a great way to model environmental stewardship for your kids without it feeling preachy — they just think they're on a mission to collect trash (which, honestly, my kids love).

No registration needed for the cleanup. Just bring gloves and bags, or pick some up at the event. Strollers are fine.

Raleigh Earth Day Festival at Dorothea Dix Park (April 26)

Dorothea Dix is one of the most beautiful parks in Raleigh, and the Earth Day Festival takes full advantage of the space. Expect eco-friendly vendors, local food, live performances, a kids' activity area, and the highlight: the Trashion Show — outfits made entirely from recycled materials that are genuinely impressive (and hilarious). The evening wraps with an outdoor movie screening starting around 5:30 PM, so bring a blanket and snacks.

Free to attend. Parking can get tight — I recommend arriving by 4 PM if you want a good spot on the lawn for the movie.

Lake Raleigh Cleanup (April 24)

If your kids are a little older (8+), the Lake Raleigh cleanup through Keep Raleigh Beautiful is a really meaningful morning activity. NC State students organize this one, so there's a nice community energy to it. You'll walk the lake trail and collect debris. After, grab lunch on Hillsborough Street — it's right there.

Register through Keep Raleigh Beautiful's website ahead of time as spaces fill up.

Low-Key Nature Ideas for Any Day This Week

William B. Umstead State Park

No Earth Day agenda needed — just get outside. Umstead has easy, stroller-friendly trails near the Crabtree Creek entrance and more challenging hikes for older kids toward Reedy Creek. The Sycamore Trail (1.6 miles) is great for the 4-and-up crowd. Free to enter. Dogs on leash welcome.

Address: 8801 Glenwood Ave, Raleigh (Crabtree Creek entrance)

Eno River State Park

For Durham families, Eno River is the move. The Few's Ford access area has a beautiful easy trail along the river that my kids have been doing since they were in carriers. April wildflowers are absolutely peak right now — look for trillium and wild geranium. Free.

Address: 6101 Cole Mill Rd, Durham

Prairie Ridge Ecostation (Raleigh)

This one is underrated. Prairie Ridge is a free outdoor science center run by the NC Museum of Natural Sciences, located in west Raleigh. It has a native plant garden, a bison habitat, and pollinator meadows — perfect for Earth Day. Open Tuesday–Sunday. Free admission.

Address: 1671 Gold Star Dr, Raleigh

Earth Day Activities to Do at Home With Kids

If you want to lean into the day itself, here are a few things we've done that kids actually enjoy:

  • Start a worm bin. I know it sounds gross but my kids are obsessed with checking on ours every morning. Red wigglers turn food scraps into compost in a few weeks and it's a living science lesson.
  • Plant a native plant. Local nurseries like Eliza's Plants in Raleigh or Niche Gardens in Chapel Hill carry native species that support local pollinators. Let kids pick one and be in charge of watering.
  • Neighborhood litter walk. Give kids a bag and gloves and walk your own neighborhood. Make it a competition. Works surprisingly well.
  • Watch a nature doc together. Our Planet on Netflix is gorgeous and appropriate for ages 6+. Good conversation starter about habitats.

    Farmers Markets Open in April

Earth Day is also a great time to start your farmers market habit for the season. The State Farmers Market in Raleigh (1201 Agriculture St) is open year-round. The Durham Farmers' Market at Durham Central Park opens for the season this month. The Carrboro Farmers' Market, one of the best in the state, runs Saturdays through fall.
