Easter Egg Hunts and Spring Events in the Triangle
Easter in the Triangle means egg hunts everywhere β from tiny church yard events to massive community celebrations with thousands of eggs. After attending more than I can count, here's what I know about finding the best ones and actually enjoying them.
Large Community Egg Hunts
City and County Events
Raleigh Parks and Recreation hosts egg hunts at multiple parks each spring. These are free, well-organized, and divided by age group. Popular locations include Laurel Hills Park, Marsh Creek Park, and Millbrook Exchange Park. They typically happen the Saturday before Easter.
Durham Parks and Recreation runs egg hunts at several locations. Check the Durham Parks website starting in early March for dates and locations.
Town of Cary hosts an annual egg hunt at WakeMed Soccer Park or Bond Park that draws big crowds. Free but arrive very early.
Town of Apex runs a well-organized hunt that's great for younger kids.Pro tip for big hunts: These go FAST. Like, 90 seconds fast. Arrive 30-45 minutes early to get a good spot, and set expectations with your kids that it'll be quick. The fun is in the anticipation and the aftermath of counting eggs, not the hunt itself.
Church and Organizational Hunts
Many local churches host excellent, free Easter egg hunts open to the community:
Cross Assembly in Raleigh typically does a huge event with inflatables and activities
Summit Church locations host family-friendly Easter events
The Village Church in Durham usually does a community egg huntFarm Easter Events
Spring Haven Farm β Chapel Hill
Spring events with baby animals, egg hunts, and flower picking. A more relaxed pace than the big community hunts.
Local Farms Along Hwy 751
Several farms between Durham and Apex open for spring activities including egg-themed fun, baby animal visits, and hayrides.
Phillips Farms β Cary
If they're doing a spring event, it's usually well done. Check their social media starting in March.
Indoor Egg Hunts (Weather Backup)
Because Easter weekend weather in North Carolina is a coin flip:
Marbles Kids Museum in Raleigh sometimes does an indoor egg hunt event
Local mall events β Southpoint and Crabtree Valley Mall often host the Easter Bunny with associated activities
Libraries occasionally do indoor egg hunts for the littlest kidsTips for a Successful Egg Hunt
What to Bring
A basket or bag (Dollar Tree baskets work great)
Sunscreen (spring sun is sneaky)
A blanket to sit on while waiting
Snacks and water
Camera β the moment they spot the first egg is pricelessStrategy
For toddlers: Stay near the back where it's less chaotic. Helpers often scatter extra eggs there for the little ones who are still figuring out what's happening.
For preschoolers: Stick to age-grouped hunts. A 4-year-old competing with 8-year-olds is a recipe for tears.
For older kids: Give them a challenge β "find the most green eggs" or "find one egg of each color."Beyond Egg Hunts
