End of School Year Survival Guide for Triangle Parents (May–June 2026)
The end of the school year in the Triangle is a marathon disguised as a sprint. Wake County's last day is Friday, June 12, 2026. Durham Public Schools and Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools end around the same week. That's six more weeks. Six weeks of field days, spirit weeks, end-of-year-parties, performances, signing yearbooks, finding the missing library book, scrambling for teacher gifts, and the gentle terror of "what is the schedule for summer?"
I've been through this enough times now that I keep a checklist. Here's what's actually worth your time, what to skip, and where to go locally for everything you'll need.
Quick Picks (For Scanners)
| Need to handle… | Do this | |—-|—-| | Teacher gift (ideal) | Group class gift card to Trader Joe's or Whole Foods, $10/family | | Last-minute camp | Check YMCA, Marbles, NC Museum of Natural Sciences for May/June openings | | End-of-year photo | Sit your kid on the front porch in their uniform, take it now (before the last day chaos) | | Yearbook signing | Have your kid bring a multipack of fine-tip Sharpies | | Field day | Sunscreen + extra water bottle in backpack the night before | | Last day tradition | Bagels for breakfast + a photo + dinner at their pick |
The Six-Week Calendar (Roughly)
Here's the rhythm of the last 6 weeks. It varies by school, but most Triangle schools follow some version of this:
Teacher Gifts: What Teachers Actually Want
I've talked to enough Triangle-area teachers to know what they really want:
The yes list:
The no list (sorry):
Group gift logistics: If you're the room parent, send the Sign-Up Genius the Monday of teacher appreciation week (May 4) for a deadline of the Friday before the last day (June 5). Don't try to coordinate the week of — half the parents are out of town.
Local Spots for Quick Teacher Gifts

Last-Minute Summer Camp Openings (Yes, You Still Have Time)
If you're reading this in late April and you don't have summer figured out, breathe — you're not alone. Some camps still have spots in May:
Often-still-open in May for the Triangle:
Pro tip: Most camp openings happen because someone cancels — call (don't email) the week before to ask about cancellations. I've gotten my kids in this way three times.

End-of-Year Traditions Worth Starting
If you don't have a last-day-of-school tradition yet, this is your year:
My family's tradition: bagels on the porch, last-day photo, a bookstore stop on the way home so they each pick one summer book, and ice cream after dinner. It's nothing fancy, and they remember it every year.

What to Look Forward To
Once the last bell rings on June 12, you have about 10 weeks before school starts again on August 24, 2026 (Wake County). That's enough time to do a beach trip, a few camp weeks, a slow week of nothing, and still have your kid bored and ready to go back. We'll have a full Wake County summer schedule guide up the first week of June.

You're going to make it through. Save this, print the checklist, and remember: nobody is keeping score. The last day of school photo is going to be amazing.
Mom Tip
If the kids are melting down, there's a nearby park or splash pad that usually saves the day. Trust me.
