YMCA of the Triangle
The YMCA is the gold standard for family fitness in the Triangle. Every location has childcare (called Child Watch), and the family programming is unmatched.
Key Locations
A.E. Finley YMCA (North Raleigh) β The flagship. Massive facility with two pools, a waterslide, basketball courts, group fitness studios, and an indoor track. Child Watch accommodates ages 6 weeks to 12 years. This place is so nice that some families treat it as their primary social hub.
Alexander Family YMCA (Cary) β Beautiful facility near Koka Booth Amphitheatre. Pool, gym, extensive group fitness schedule. Child Watch has a great staff.
Chapel Hill-Carrboro YMCA β Located in Meadowmont with a warm, community feel. Smaller than the Raleigh and Cary locations but perfectly adequate. Pool, gym, and group classes.
Southeast Raleigh YMCA β Newer facility serving an underserved part of the city. Full amenities including pool and Child Watch.
YMCA Costs
Family membership: $75-$120/month depending on location and household size. Child Watch is included β no extra fee. This alone makes the Y the best value for families.
Financial assistance: The Y offers income-based scholarship memberships. No one is turned away for inability to pay. Apply at the front desk β they're discreet and kind about the process.
Y Programs Beyond the Gym
Planet Fitness
Multiple Triangle locations with the Black Card membership ($24.99/month) including access to the Kids Club childcare center. Ages 6 months to 10 years. The childcare is basic (think: coloring, small play area) but functional. Open during most gym hours. This is the budget option.
Locations with Kids Club: Check the Planet Fitness website β not every location has one. The Raleigh, Cary, and Durham locations on major roads typically do.
O2 Fitness
O2 Fitness has several Triangle locations with childcare:
Childcare is called KidZone and is available for ages 6 weeks to 12 years. The facilities are nicer than Planet Fitness with a more boutique feel β group classes, personal training, and pool at some locations.
Cost: $50-$80/month for a single membership, $80-$120 for family. KidZone may have an additional small monthly fee ($10-$25).
Lifetime Fitness
Location: Cary (near Crossroads)
This is the premium option. Lifetime is essentially a family resort: indoor and outdoor pools with water features, a full-size basketball court, rock climbing wall, indoor cycling studio, extensive kids' programming, and Kids Academy childcare.
Kids Academy goes beyond basic childcare β they have age-appropriate activities, a craft room, and a gym for the kids. Ages 3 months to 11 years. Limited to 2 hours per visit.
Cost: $150-$200+/month for a family membership. It's pricey, but families who go 4-5 times a week consider it worthwhile.
Specialized Studios with Childcare
CrossFit
Several Triangle CrossFit boxes offer childcare during popular class times:
Barre and Yoga Studios
The Barre Code (North Hills, Raleigh) and some CorePower Yoga locations occasionally offer childcare during specific classes. These tend to be less consistent, so call ahead.
Outdoor Family Fitness
When the weather cooperates (which is most of the year in the Triangle), outdoor options are plentiful and free:
Making It Work
The biggest barrier to working out as a parent isn't motivation β it's logistics. Here's what works:
The Triangle's gym scene has something for every budget and fitness level. The hardest part is walking through the door the first time. After that, it becomes the best part of your day.
