Family-Friendly Restaurants Near Duke University
Duke's campus is stunning, and the surrounding neighborhoods β especially Ninth Street and Brightleaf β have a food scene that's perfect for family outings. Whether you're visiting for a game, a campus tour, or a day at the Sarah P. Duke Gardens, here's where to eat with kids.
Ninth Street
Ninth Street is the commercial strip closest to campus and our go-to for family dining in this area.
Elmo's Diner is the anchor of Ninth Street family dining. Breakfast all day, enormous portions, and a kids menu with actual variety. The pancakes can feed two small children, and the milkshakes are thick and generously sized. Expect a wait on weekend mornings (15-30 minutes), but it's worth it. Kids meals $5-7, adult entrees $9-14.
Cosmic Cantina is right on Ninth Street and serves burritos the size of a football for about $7. The quesadillas are a safe bet for kids ($4). Counter service means fast food without the drive-through. Very casual.
Ninth Street Bakery has pastries and coffee for a quick breakfast or snack. The cinnamon rolls are our weakness. Pastries $3-5, coffee $3-5.
Brightleaf District
Parker and Otis in the Brightleaf District has a gourmet deli with excellent sandwiches and a curated market. The kids love browsing the candy and snack section while we order. Sandwiches $9-13, baked goods $3-5. Good for a quick lunch.
Bull City Burger and Brewery is nearby on Morgan Street. Great burgers, house-brewed beer for parents, and a casual atmosphere. Burgers $12-16, kids meals $6-8.
Near Duke Gardens
If you're visiting the Sarah P. Duke Gardens (free entry, one of the most beautiful spots in the Triangle), plan a meal around it:
Before the Gardens: Breakfast or lunch at Elmo's Diner (10-minute drive) After the Gardens: Ice cream at The Parlour on W. Main Street or a snack from Parker and Otis
