Raleigh is one of the best cities in the Southeast for families, with world-class free museums, beautiful parks, and tons of kid-friendly activities. Here's how to plan an unforgettable family weekend.

Saturday Morning: Museums

Start your day at the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences in downtown Raleigh. Kids will love the dinosaur exhibits, live animal encounters, and the incredible Nature Research Center. Best of all? It's completely free.

After that, walk next door to the NC Museum of History for hands-on exhibits about pirates, the Wright Brothers, and North Carolina's musical heritage.

Saturday Afternoon: Outdoor Fun

Head to Pullen Park, one of the oldest amusement parks in the US. Ride the 1911 carousel, take a paddleboat on the lake, or let the kids burn energy on the playground. Rides are just $1.50 each.

Saturday Evening: Family Dinner

Bida Manda — This Laotian restaurant in downtown Raleigh is surprisingly kid-friendly, with rice dishes and noodle soups that even picky eaters enjoy.

Sunday: Nature Day

Spend Sunday morning at Prairie Ridge Ecostation, a free nature preserve run by the Museum of Natural Sciences. Kids can explore butterfly gardens, catch tadpoles, and learn about local wildlife.

Then finish the weekend at Lake Johnson Park for an easy lakeside walk and a picnic.

Mom Tip

If the kids are melting down, there's a nearby park or splash pad that usually saves the day. Trust me.
