The Asiatic arboretum has a koi pond where kids can watch the fish for ages. The terraces have fountains perfect for warm-weather splashing (just wading β no swimming). Pack a picnic and eat on the great lawn.
West Point on the Eno
5101 N Roxboro Rd, Durham | Always freeFree parking, free trails, and a beautiful river for wading in summer. The historic mill is fascinating and the trails are gentle enough for preschoolers. There is a working water wheel and an old photography museum on site. This is one of my top five parks in the entire Triangle.
Durham Central Park
501 Foster St, Durham | Always freeFree playground, open green space, and right next to the Durham Farmers Market on Saturdays. The covered pavilion has events throughout the year. My toddler loves the climbing structures.
Northgate Park
300 W Club Blvd, Durham | Always freeFree disc golf course (9 holes), playground, walking trails, and a pool that opens in summer ($1/person for Durham residents). One of Durham's best family parks.

Durham Farmers Market + Park
501 Foster St, Durham | Free entry, budget for foodThe Durham Farmers Market runs Saturdays year-round (outdoor in warm months, indoor at the Durham Armory in winter). Free to attend, and you can feed a family on $10 with tamales, pastries, and fresh fruit.
Bennett Place Historic Site + Picnic
4409 Bennett Memorial Rd, Durham | Always freeFree historic site with a small museum and reconstructed buildings from the Civil War. Bring a packed lunch and eat at the picnic tables on the grounds. Great for school-age kids learning history.
Eno River State Park
6101 Cole Mill Rd, Durham | Always freeOver 30 miles of free hiking trails. The Fews Ford access point is the best for families β short loop trails, river access for wading, and flat terrain for little legs. Cox Mountain Trail is more challenging for older kids.

Parker and Otis
112 S Duke St, DurhamNot free, but incredibly budget-friendly for a family lunch in a fun atmosphere. This deli and general store has sandwiches for about $8-10 and a kids' section with toys and books. Share a sandwich and a pastry and you are under $15 for two adults and two kids.
Durham Bulls Athletic Park Area Exploration
409 Blackwell St, DurhamEven when there is no game, the area around the Bulls stadium is fun and free. The famous bull sculpture is great for photos, and the American Tobacco Campus right next door is free to explore with its restored historic buildings, water features, and open spaces. Add lunch from a food truck for $10-15.
Duke Lemur Center
3705 Erwin Rd, Durham | Tours start at $14/adult, $10/childOkay, this one pushes the budget for a full family, but hear me out: one parent + one kid can do a tour for $24. Or wait for their occasional free community events. This is the world's largest collection of lemurs outside Madagascar and absolutely worth prioritizing.

Fullsteam Brewery Family Afternoon
726 Rigsbee Ave, DurhamFullsteam is Durham's family-friendliest brewery. Kids are welcome, there is a large outdoor area, and food trucks park outside. Two beers for the parents ($10-12) and a food truck snack for the kids ($5-8) makes a great family hangout under $20.
Ice Cream Tour of Ninth Street

Total: $5 for market food. Five hours of family fun.
