Twenty dollars for a family outing in Raleigh? Not only is it possible — it is honestly some of the best fun you will have. Here are my tried-and-true Raleigh outings that keep the whole family happy for under $20 total.

Under $5 Family Outings

Pullen Park

520 Ashe Ave, Raleigh

The playground and park areas are completely free. If you want to ride the train or carousel, rides are just $1.50 each. A family of four can ride everything for about $6 total. Pack a lunch and you have a full day for almost nothing.

  • Train ride: $1.50/person
  • Carousel: $1.50/person
  • Pedal boats: $5/boat (seasonal, free on select days)
  • Playground and park: Free
  • My budget move: Pack sandwiches, ride the train once each ($6 for a family of 4), and spend the rest of the time on the free playground. Total: $6.

    Lake Johnson Park

    4601 Avent Ferry Rd, Raleigh

Free parking, free trails, and free playground. If you want to rent a kayak or canoe, it is only $5/hour. One parent paddles with a kid while the other stays at the playground — then switch.

  • Park entry: Free
  • Kayak rental: $5/hour
  • Shelley Lake

    1400 W Millbrook Rd, Raleigh

Free parking, a beautiful 2-mile loop trail around the lake, and a great playground. Bring bread for the ducks (actually, bring duck-appropriate food like peas or corn). Pack a picnic and this is a zero-dollar day.

    $5-10 Family Outings

Marbles Kids Museum (Free First Friday)

    201 E Hargett St, Raleigh

Normally $10/person, but free on the first Friday of each month from 5-9pm. If you miss the free night, going on a regular day for one parent + one kid is $20. Or get the family membership ($125/year) which pays for itself in two visits if you have multiple kids.

    Raleigh City Farm

    800 N Bloodworth St, Raleigh

Free to visit this urban farm in downtown Raleigh. Buy a small bag of produce for $3-5 when in season. Kids love seeing vegetables growing in the middle of the city.

    Train Watching at Boylan Bridge

    Boylan Ave, Raleigh

Park free on Boylan Avenue and walk to the pedestrian bridge. Watch trains pass underneath (multiple per hour during peak times) with a stunning Raleigh skyline view. Pack snacks. This is especially magical at sunset.

  • Cost: $0 (maybe $3-5 if you grab a coffee at Boulted Bread nearby)
  • $10-15 Family Outings

Frankie's Fun Park — Selective Approach

    11190 Fun Park Dr, Raleigh

Frankie's can get expensive fast, but here is the budget hack: buy just the mini golf package. It is about $9-11/person. Go during weekday afternoons for shorter waits and sometimes discounted rates.

  • Mini golf only: ~$9-11/person (look for online coupons)
  • Raleigh Ice Cream Tour

Pick 2-3 ice cream shops and split scoops as a family:
  • Two Roosters (215 E Franklin St) — Unique flavors, $4-5/scoop
  • Andia's Homemade Ice Cream (1820 N Market Dr) — Generous portions, $4-5/scoop
  • La Michoacana (multiple locations) — Incredible paletas for $2-3 each
  • Split three scoops among four people: ~$12-15 total. Make it a progressive ice cream walk.

    Dorothea Dix Park Picnic

    101 Blair Dr, Raleigh

Free entry to this gorgeous hilltop park with skyline views. Pack a full picnic from home ($5-10 in supplies) and spend the afternoon. The wide-open fields are perfect for frisbee, soccer, or kite flying. There is a small playground for younger kids.

    $15-20 Family Outings

NC Museum of Natural Sciences + Food Truck Lunch

Museum is free. Budget $15-20 for a food truck lunch for the family from one of the trucks that park downtown near the museum. This is a legitimate full-day outing.

  • Museum: Free
  • Food truck lunch: $15-20 for sharing plates
  • Neuse River Greenway Bike Ride

If you have your own bikes, the 28-mile Neuse River Greenway is free. If you need to rent, Citrix Cycle (Raleigh's bike share) is about $2-3/ride. Budget a few dollars for snacks at a trailside stop.

  • Bike share: $2-3/ride
  • Snacks: $5-10
  • Yates Mill Pond County Park

    4620 Lake Wheeler Rd, Raleigh

The trails around the pond are free. The historic mill tour is $3/adult, $2/child. Pack a picnic and make an afternoon of it.

  • Mill tour: ~$10 for a family of 4
  • Trails and pond: Free
  • Library + Park Combo Day

This is my family's go-to weekend plan: 1. Morning: Free storytime and craft at any Wake County Library branch 2. Midday: Packed lunch at a nearby park 3. Afternoon: Free playground time

  • Total cost: $0-5 for picnic supplies from home
  • Pro Budget Tips for Raleigh Families

  • Pullen Park rides accept exact change — bring quarters and you will spend less impulsively.
  • Pack water bottles — buying drinks is the hidden budget killer at any outing.
  • Go during off-peak hours — less crowded means more fun per dollar.
  • Stack free things — Museum + park + greenway in one trip.
  • Check Raleigh Parks and Rec for free special events — they host dozens throughout the year.
  • Twenty dollars goes surprisingly far in Raleigh when you know where to spend it. My family does these outings every weekend and my kids think we are living large. That is the goal.
