Family Guide to Marbles Kids Museum (Raleigh)

Marbles Kids Museum is downtown Raleigh's premier destination for kids ages 0—10, and it's a lifesaver on rainy days, scorching summer afternoons, and those random teacher workdays. With interactive exhibits, a giant IMAX theater, and endless opportunities for imaginative play, Marbles earns its reputation as one of the best children's museums in the Southeast.

The Basics

  • Location: 201 E Hargett Street, Raleigh, NC 27601
  • Hours: Tuesday—Saturday 9 AM—5 PM, Sunday 12—5 PM (closed Mondays)
  • Admission: $9 per person (adults and children 1+). Under 1 free. IMAX tickets are separate ($7—$9).
  • Parking: The Blount Street parking deck is closest. Validate your ticket at Marbles for a reduced rate. Street metered parking is also available.
  • Exhibit Highlights

    For Toddlers (Ages 0—3)

  • Tot Spot — a dedicated space for babies and toddlers with soft play structures, sensory walls, and age-appropriate toys. This is gated so crawlers can't escape.
  • Around Town — a miniature town where kids can "work" at a vet clinic, grocery store, and other shops. Toddlers love pushing the tiny carts.
  • For Preschoolers (Ages 3—6)

  • Splash! — a water play area with aprons provided. Kids can build dams, race boats, and explore water flow. Bring a change of shirt.
  • BB&T Moneypalooza — kids learn about money through play. They can "drive" a car, shop at a market, and work at a bank.
  • Storybook Forest — a reading and imagination area with costumes and a stage.
  • For Bigger Kids (Ages 6—10)

  • Maker Space — building challenges with real tools and materials (when staffed).
  • Cosmic Climber — a three-story climbing structure. Kids must be at least 42 inches tall.
  • Sports Zone — active play with racing, throwing, and coordination challenges.
  • The IMAX Theater

The Wells Fargo IMAX Theater at Marbles is the largest IMAX screen in North Carolina. They show a rotating selection of educational and family-friendly films — think ocean documentaries, space films, and occasionally mainstream blockbusters.

  • Tickets: $7—$9 depending on the film
  • Best for ages: 4+ (the screen is enormous and the sound is very loud — it can overwhelm toddlers)
  • Pro tip: Buy IMAX tickets online in advance. Popular showings sell out, especially on rainy weekends.
  • Tips for Visiting

  • Go early on weekdays. If your kids are preschool age and you have a flexible schedule, Tuesday and Wednesday mornings are blissfully uncrowded.
  • Weekend mornings fill up fast. Arrive right at 9 AM or wait until after 2 PM when the morning crowd thins.
  • Wear socks. Some exhibits require kids to remove shoes.
  • Bring water. They allow water bottles but no food in exhibit areas. There's a snack area near the entrance.
  • Strollers can be parked in a designated area. You won't need them inside — the space is compact enough.
  • Plan for 2—3 hours. That's usually the sweet spot before meltdown territory.
  • Membership

A family membership starts at $139/year and includes unlimited visits, guest passes, discounts on IMAX and birthday parties, and invitations to member-only events. If you have kids under 5, membership is a no-brainer — you'll go at least once a month.

    Nearby Eats

After your visit, walk to Morgan Street Food Hall (5-minute walk) for a huge variety of kid-friendly options. Bida Manda on S Wilmington Street is fantastic Laotian food if the adults want something special (they're patient with kids). For a quick treat, Lucettegrace has beautiful pastries and gelato.

    Combine with Other Downtown Activities

Since you're already in downtown Raleigh, consider:

  • Walking to Moore Square for the playground
  • Visiting the NC Museum of Natural Sciences (free, a 10-minute walk)
  • Grabbing lunch at the Raleigh Union Station food options
  • Marbles is the kind of place where kids learn without knowing they're learning, and parents can actually relax for a few minutes while their kids are engaged. It's a Triangle essential.
