Decision Tree: Where to Go
Call Your Pediatrician's Nurse Line First
Almost every pediatric practice has a 24/7 nurse advice line. Call this number before going anywhere. Experienced pediatric nurses can often tell you whether you need to be seen urgently, can wait until morning, or just need Tylenol and rest.
Urgent Care (Non-Emergency)
Go to urgent care for:
Emergency Room (True Emergencies)
Go to the ER for:
Pediatric-Focused Urgent Care
WakeMed Children's Urgent Care
Location: 10000 Falls of Neuse Road, Raleigh
This is the Triangle's dedicated pediatric urgent care. Staffed by pediatric-trained providers who see only children. Open evenings and weekends. Shorter wait times than the ER and designed specifically for kids (child-friendly decor, smaller equipment). This is your best first stop for non-emergency kid issues outside of office hours.
Duke Urgent Care Locations
Duke Urgent Care has several locations throughout the Triangle — Brier Creek, South Durham, and Morrisville among others. Not pediatric-specific, but Duke providers are well-trained for all ages. Most have X-ray on site. Wait times are posted online.
UNC Urgent Care
UNC Urgent Care at Meadowmont and other locations serve Chapel Hill and surrounding areas. Part of the UNC Health system, so records transfer seamlessly if you need a specialist follow-up.
Emergency Rooms with Pediatric Expertise
UNC Children's Hospital ER
Location: 101 Manning Drive, Chapel Hill
Full pediatric emergency department staffed by pediatric emergency medicine physicians 24/7. This is a Level 1 Pediatric Trauma Center — the highest level. If your child has a true emergency and you're in Orange or western Durham County, this is where to go.
Duke Children's Hospital ER
Location: 2301 Erwin Road, Durham
Another world-class pediatric ER. Pediatric emergency physicians on staff around the clock. Level 1 Pediatric Trauma Center. If you're in Durham, this is your top choice for emergencies.
WakeMed Children's Hospital ER
Location: 3000 New Bern Avenue, Raleigh
WakeMed's pediatric ER is the go-to for families in Raleigh and eastern Wake County. Separate pediatric waiting area and treatment rooms. Not a freestanding children's hospital like UNC and Duke, but the pediatric care is excellent.
After-Hours Hacks from Veteran Parents
The CVS MinuteClinic / Walgreens Healthcare Clinic Option
For simple issues like strep tests, flu tests, or pink eye treatment, walk-in clinics at CVS and Walgreens can be faster and cheaper than urgent care. Most see children age 18 months and older. Copays are typically $20-$40. Available evenings and weekends.
Telehealth
Many pediatric practices now offer telehealth visits for after-hours concerns. Duke MyChart and UNC MyChart have on-demand video visit options. Your insurance often covers these at the same copay as an office visit. Perfect for "is this worth going in?" questions.
What to Bring
Have a go-bag ready (you'll be glad you did):
Cost Reality
The cost difference between urgent care and the ER is significant. If it's not a true emergency, urgent care is almost always the better choice — financially and in terms of wait time.
Save These Numbers
Being prepared doesn't mean you won't panic when your kid gets hurt or sick at a terrible hour. It means you'll panic for 30 seconds instead of 30 minutes, and you'll know exactly where to drive.
