Farm Stands, U-Pick Farms, and Farmers Markets in the Triangle
One of the best things about living in the Triangle is being surrounded by working farms. Strawberry picking in spring, peach picking in summer, apple picking in fall β these are the experiences our kids talk about for weeks. Add in the excellent farmers markets, and you've got year-round family food adventures.
U-Pick Farms
Strawberry Season (Late April - Early June)
Porter Farms in Kinston (about 90 minutes from Raleigh) is worth the drive for the best U-pick strawberry experience we've found. The fields are well-maintained, the berries are enormous, and the farm atmosphere is idyllic. Pricing is typically by the pound ($3-5/lb). Arrive early on weekends β they can pick out quickly. Check their Facebook page for availability before making the drive.
Phillips Farms in Cary offers U-pick strawberries closer to home. The fields are well-maintained and it's much more convenient if you don't want a long drive. Pricing by the pound. Check ahead for picking conditions.
Blueberry Season (June - July)
Lyon Farms in Creedmoor (about 30 minutes from North Raleigh) has U-pick blueberries that are a summer tradition for our family. The bushes are large and well-established, which means plenty of berries and easy picking for even toddler-height kids. Pricing by the pound ($3-5/lb). Bring sunscreen and water β there's minimal shade in the fields.
Apple Season (September - October)
Hillcrest Orchard in Hendersonville (about 3.5 hours west) is a full-day trip, but the experience is worth it. Apple picking in the NC mountains with cool fall air and mountain views is a core family memory. Various apple varieties, pricing by the bag ($15-25). Combine with a trip to a mountain town for lunch.
Closer to home, Millstone Creek Orchards near Ramseur (about 90 minutes) offers apple picking with a more accessible day-trip timeline.
Farmers Markets
Year-Round Markets
State Farmers Market in Raleigh on Lake Wheeler Road is the biggest in the area. Open year-round, seven days a week. The main building has produce vendors, and the surrounding buildings have a garden center, a restaurant (Farmers Market Restaurant has Southern comfort food β biscuits, country ham, and pie), and seasonal vendors. Free parking, no admission fee. Produce prices vary by season but are generally competitive.
Durham Farmers' Market at the Durham Central Park pavilion runs Saturdays (April-November, 8 AM-12 PM) and Wednesdays (April-October, 3-6 PM). This is our favorite market for the combination of excellent food vendors (tamales, pastries, fresh bread), quality produce, and the adjacent park where kids can play. Arrive early for the best selection.
Carrboro Farmers' Market on Saturday mornings at the Carrboro Town Commons is one of the oldest farmers markets in the state. The produce quality is exceptional, and the market has a loyal community feel. Live music some mornings. Parking can be tricky β arrive by 8:30 AM.
Seasonal Markets
Western Wake Farmers' Market in Cary runs Saturdays at the Cary Downtown Park. It's smaller than Raleigh or Durham but has excellent vendors and a nice community atmosphere.
Midtown Farmers' Market at North Hills in Raleigh runs Saturdays in season. Convenient location if you live in North Raleigh.
Farm Stands
Coon Rock Farm in Hillsborough has a farm stand with seasonal produce and sometimes hosts events. The rural setting is a nice escape from the suburbs.
Larry's Beans in Raleigh (coffee roaster) hosts occasional farm-to-table events and has a small retail area. Not a farm stand per se, but a local food connection worth knowing.
Making Farm Visits Work With Kids
What to Bring
Farm Visit Tips
1. Go early. The best produce gets picked first, and it's cooler in the morning. 2. Let kids eat a few berries. It's part of the experience (and expected by most farms). 3. Set expectations. "We're picking one bucket" prevents the hour-long strawberry marathon. 4. Combine with lunch. Pack a picnic or hit a nearby restaurant after. 5. Talk about where food comes from. Farms are a living classroom.
