Farm-to-Table Restaurants Families Will Love in the Triangle
Teaching kids where food comes from is one of the best things about living in an area rich with farms and local food culture. The Triangle's farm-to-table scene is thriving, and many of these restaurants are more kid-friendly than you'd expect.
Raleigh
Irregardless Cafe on Morgan Street has been doing farm-to-table before it was trendy β since 1975. The menu changes based on what's in season, but there's always a reliable kids menu ($6-9) and the atmosphere is welcoming. The jazz brunch on weekends is a family institution. Adult entrees $16-28. Reservations recommended.
Poole's Diner on S. McDowell Street is one of Raleigh's most beloved restaurants, run by James Beard-nominated chef Ashley Christensen. The mac and cheese is legendary. While it's a nicer restaurant, the diner format and community table seating make it more casual than you'd think. No dedicated kids menu, but the pasta and simple entrees work for adventurous young eaters. Entrees $16-26.
The Optimist on S. Blount Street (also from Christensen's restaurant group) has a bright, welcoming space and a menu focused on seasonal ingredients. The fish dishes are excellent, and kids can enjoy simply prepared proteins with vegetable sides. Entrees $18-30.
Durham
Piedmont on W. Main Street is a Durham gem with a deep commitment to local sourcing. The menu reads like a love letter to NC farms. For families, the burger is outstanding, and the seasonal vegetable sides are so good even reluctant veggie eaters might try them. Entrees $16-26. The atmosphere is upscale casual.
Picnic on W. Pettigrew Street sources its pork and chicken locally and cooks everything simply. The BBQ and fried chicken are the stars, and the outdoor picnic seating makes it naturally family-friendly. Plates $10-15.
Mateo Bar de Tapas on W. Main Street serves Spanish-influenced tapas with local ingredients. The small-plates format is actually great for families because kids can try several things. The patatas bravas (potatoes) are always a hit. Tapas $8-16 each. Best for families with adventurous eaters.
Chapel Hill & Carrboro
Acme Food & Beverage in Carrboro is our top farm-to-table pick for a family special dinner. The sourcing is impeccable, the cooking is skillful, and the atmosphere, while upscale, is not stuffy. The roasted chicken is memorable. Entrees $18-28. Reservations recommended on weekends.
Weaver Street Market in Carrboro and Chapel Hill is a co-op grocery with prepared foods made from local ingredients. It's the most casual farm-to-table experience β grab a plate and eat on the lawn. Meals $7-12.
Teaching Kids About Local Food
Farm-to-table restaurants are a natural starting point for conversations about food:
Making Upscale Dining Work With Kids
Many of these restaurants feel "fancy," but here's how to make it work:
1. Go early. A 5:30 PM reservation at a farm-to-table spot means you'll practically have the place to yourselves. 2. Sit on the patio. More room, more forgiveness for noise and movement. 3. Order immediately. Bread and a shared appetizer keep kids occupied while entrees are prepared. 4. Don't stress the kids menu. A side of mac and cheese and some bread is a perfectly fine kid dinner at a nice restaurant. 5. Budget for it. These meals are more expensive ($60-100 for a family of four), so think of it as a special occasion, not a regular Tuesday.
