Dorcas Ministries (Cary) β A beloved community thrift shop on East Chatham Street where items are priced at rock-bottom prices ($1-$3 for kids' clothes). They also have a community assistance program where qualifying families can receive free clothing.
Durham Rescue Mission Thrift Store β Extremely affordable clothing, plus the mission provides free clothing to families in crisis. Multiple locations in Durham.
Urban Ministries of Wake County β Provides free clothing to families in need through their community programs. Located on Poole Road in Raleigh. You may need a referral from a social worker, but walk-ins are sometimes accepted.
Families Together (Durham) β Serves Durham families with free clothing, food, and other essentials. Community-center based programs with a welcoming environment.
Church Clothing Closets
Many Triangle churches operate free clothing closets, often organized by volunteers and stocked by donations:
Call ahead to check hours and eligibility. Most are open to anyone in need, regardless of membership.
Buy Nothing Groups
The Buy Nothing Project has active groups throughout the Triangle organized by neighborhood. Members give away items (including kids' clothes) freely. Search "Buy Nothing [your neighborhood]" on Facebook. These groups are active, friendly, and judgment-free.
Community Swaps
Several Triangle organizations host seasonal clothing swaps where families bring what they've outgrown and take what they need β all free:
Budget Thrift Stores
Goodwill
Multiple locations throughout the Triangle. Kids' clothes typically $2-$5. The Goodwill on Capital Boulevard in Raleigh and the Goodwill in South Durham are particularly well-stocked. Half-price tag color days rotate weekly β check the sign at the door for that day's discount color.
Salvation Army Family Store
Locations in Raleigh, Durham, and Cary. Prices are slightly lower than Goodwill on average. They run frequent promotions ($1 bag sales are amazing). The kids' section at the Western Boulevard location in Raleigh is large and well-organized.
Habitat for Humanity ReStore
Primarily furniture and home goods, but several locations also carry clothing. The prices are rock-bottom and proceeds support Habitat's mission. Locations in Raleigh, Durham, and Cary.
Plato's Closet and Once Upon a Child
Already covered in our consignment guide, but worth mentioning here: Once Upon a Child locations in Raleigh, Cary, and Durham sell gently used kids' clothes at 50-70% off retail prices. Not free, but significantly cheaper than new.

North Carolina's Work First program (Temporary Assistance for Needy Families) provides cash assistance that can be used for clothing. Apply through your local DSS office in Wake, Durham, or Orange County.

While WIC and Medicaid don't directly provide clothing, caseworkers can connect you with local resources. Ask your case manager about clothing assistance programs.
