I have been tracking these for years, and here is my definitive month-by-month guide to the recurring free stuff you can count on.Home Depot Kids Workshop — Free at all Triangle locations. Kids build a wooden project and keep it. Register online.
Kidzu Children's Museum First Saturday — Occasional free community events. Check their calendar. Kidzu Children's Museum Free First Sunday (Chapel Hill) — Free admission all day (normally $10). First Friday Raleigh — Free art gallery openings downtown, usually with free refreshments.
Marbles Kids Museum Free First Friday (Raleigh) — Free admission 5-9pm (normally $10). Third Friday Durham — Free art walk in downtown Durham with galleries and live music. Library Storytimes — Free at all Wake County (22 branches) and Durham County libraries. Multiple days and times for different ages.
Farmers Markets — Free to attend. Raleigh (year-round at State Farmers Market), Durham, Carrboro, and Cary. New Year's Day Hikes — Free ranger-led first day hikes at Umstead, Eno River, and other state parks.
Library Winter Reading Programs — Free at most Triangle libraries with prizes for completing challenges.
MLK Day Free Events — Free celebrations at various Triangle locations, including the NC Museum of History.
Indoor Nature Centers — Free visits to Blue Jay Point, Hemlock Bluffs, and Prairie Ridge. Black History Month Programs — [free events](/free) at NC Museum of History, Durham libraries, and Historic Stagville.
Valentine's Day Crafts — Free at Triangle libraries and Michaels stores.
NC Museum of Natural Sciences Special Programs — Free winter break activities if schools have a mid-winter break.
Indoor Storytime Series — Extra free programs at bookstores including Barnes & Noble and Quail Ridge Books. Spring Break Library Programs — Free all-week programming at Wake and Durham County libraries.
JC Raulston Arboretum Spring Walks — Free guided walks as the garden comes alive.
St. Patrick's Day Parades — Free parades in Raleigh and Durham.
Daylight Saving Time Bonus — Evening greenway walks and park visits are free and finally have daylight. Easter Egg Hunts — Free community hunts at Triangle parks and churches. Towns including Cary, Holly Springs, and Morrisville all host free ones.
Earth Day Events — Free celebrations at museums, parks, and nature centers across the Triangle.
Eno River Wildflower Hikes — Free ranger-led hikes during peak wildflower season.
Prairie Ridge Ecostation Spring Programs — Free pond dipping, bird walks, and pollinator activities. Memorial Day Events — Free ceremonies and parades across the Triangle.
Splash Pads Open — Free water play starts at Halifax Park, Anderson Point, and other locations.
Cary Dance Festival — Free dance performances in downtown Cary.
Museum of Natural Sciences BugFest Prep — Free bug-related programs building up to the fall festival. Summer Reading Programs — Free at all Triangle libraries. Usually includes free books, prizes, and weekly programs.

Back to School Events — Free school supply drives and community events across the Triangle.
NC Chinese Lantern Festival — Not free, but many free alternative cultural events happen alongside it.
National Night Out — Free neighborhood block parties and community events Triangle-wide. SPARKcon (Raleigh) — Free multi-block arts festival downtown. Music, dance, art, kids' activities, all free.
Wide Open Bluegrass (Raleigh) — Free outdoor stages with world-class bluegrass during IBMA week.
Bull Durham Blues Festival — Free outdoor music festival.
Cary Diwali — Free cultural celebration.
Labor Day Events — Free family activities at various Triangle parks. Free Halloween Events — Trick-or-treating at Triangle malls and downtowns. Cary, Holly Springs, and Morrisville host free Halloween festivals.
BugFest (NC Museum of Natural Sciences, Raleigh) — Free one-day festival. Biggest bug event in the country.
Fall Festivals — Free community festivals at Holly Springs (HollyFest), Fuquay-Varina, and other Triangle towns.
Eno River Fall Foliage Hikes — Free ranger-led hikes. Raleigh Christmas Parade (mid-November) — Free. One of the biggest parades in NC.
Durham Holiday Parade — Free community tradition.
Tree Lighting Ceremonies — Free events in Raleigh, Cary, Durham, and Chapel Hill.
Veterans Day Events — Free ceremonies and museum activities. Holiday Lights Tours — Free driving tours of the best neighborhood displays.
