Nasher Museum of Art β Free on Thursdays
2001 Campus Dr, Durham (Duke University) | Free every ThursdayThe Nasher is a stunning contemporary art museum that normally charges $7 for adults. But every Thursday, admission is free for everyone. The building itself is worth the visit β the architecture is incredible. Kids respond well to the bold contemporary pieces, and there is usually a family guide at the front desk.
Tip: Combine with a walk through the Duke Gardens (also free) right next door.
Ackland Art Museum (Chapel Hill)
101 S Columbia St, Chapel Hill | Always freeTechnically Chapel Hill, but close enough for a Durham day trip. The Ackland is always free and has excellent rotating exhibitions. Their family days (usually one Saturday per month) include free art-making activities.
Bennett Place Historic Site
4409 Bennett Memorial Rd, Durham | Always freeThis is where the largest surrender of the Civil War took place. The small museum and reconstructed buildings are free to visit. It is a quieter experience that works well for school-age kids studying history.
Historic Stagville
5828 Old Oxford Hwy, Durham | Always freeOne of the largest plantation complexes in the South, now a state historic site with free tours and educational programs. This is meaningful, important history presented thoughtfully. Best for kids 8 and up.
Duke University Chapel
401 Chapel Dr, Durham | Always freeEven if you are not religious, this Gothic chapel is breathtaking. Free to enter and explore. The stained glass windows keep kids mesmerized, and the organ concerts (check the schedule) are free.

Durham County Library is genuinely one of the best library systems I have used anywhere. Every branch offers free programming, but here are the highlights:
Durham County Library β Main Branch
300 N Roxboro St, Durham | All programs freeThe main branch has a dedicated children's floor with a play area, computers, and daily programming. Their maker space has 3D printers, vinyl cutters, and sewing machines β all free with a library card. The STEM kits you can check out (coding robots, circuit kits, telescopes) are a game-changer.
South Regional Library
4505 S Alston Ave, Durham | All programs freeExcellent bilingual storytimes and one of the best children's sections in the system. Free homework help after school too.
North Regional Library
