Summer is the golden season for free outdoor music. These series run weekly or bi-weekly from roughly May through September.
North Hills Midtown Music Series
4421 Six Forks Rd, Raleigh | FreeFriday evening concerts in the North Hills plaza. Family-friendly atmosphere with restaurants and shops nearby. Bring a blanket or grab seats at nearby restaurants. Music ranges from cover bands to regional acts.
Koka Booth Amphitheatre Free Concerts
8003 Regency Pkwy, Cary | Free select showsCary's beautiful lakeside amphitheatre hosts several free concerts each season. The lawn is family-friendly and the setting is gorgeous. Pack a picnic blanket and snacks.
Durham Central Park Music Series
501 Foster St, Durham | FreeFree concerts in Durham's Central Park on summer evenings. The park has a playground so kids can play during the music. Food vendors often set up nearby.
Raleigh City Plaza Concerts
400 Fayetteville St, Raleigh | FreeDowntown Raleigh hosts free concerts on the City Plaza throughout warmer months. Great for an evening out after a museum visit.
Chapel Hill Summer Concert Series

Wide Open Bluegrass
Downtown Raleigh | Free outdoor stagesEvery fall (usually late September/early October), Raleigh hosts the International Bluegrass Music Association's World of Bluegrass conference. The free outdoor stages on Fayetteville Street feature world-class bluegrass, and the atmosphere is incredibly family-friendly. Kids dance in the streets. This is one of the best free music events in the entire Southeast.
Bull Durham Blues Festival
Durham Central Park | FreeAnnual free blues festival in September. Outdoor setting with food vendors. Family-friendly daytime hours with the music getting more adult-oriented in the evening.
First Friday Raleigh
Downtown Raleigh | FreeFirst Friday gallery openings often feature live music β acoustic performers, jazz combos, and local bands playing in galleries and on sidewalks. Free to attend, and the variety is great for exposing kids to different music genres.
