Free Museums and Cultural Experiences
The Triangle's free museum scene is genuinely world-class:

NC Museum of Natural Sciences β The most-visited museum in the Southeast. Free. Dinosaurs, live animals, nature exhibits. The new Nature Research Center adds interactive STEM experiences. Could easily spend 3-4 hours here.
NC Museum of History β Free. Carolina history from Native Americans through present day. Kids love the Sports Hall of Fame and the Civil War exhibits.
NC Museum of Art β Free (permanent collection). Stunning art park with outdoor sculpture trail. The 164-acre grounds are perfect for family walks.
Marbles Kids Museum β Not free ($8/person), but offers free community days and reduced-price memberships for qualifying families.
NC State Capitol β Free tours. Kids are surprisingly engaged by the architecture and history.
Pullen Park β Train rides and carousel are $1.50 each. Playground and grounds are free.Durham

Duke Lemur Center β Tours cost $14/adult, $10/child, but they offer scholarship visits for Title I schools and underserved communities.

Library Programs
Already covered in our storytime guide, but worth repeating: every library branch in Wake, Durham, and Orange counties offers free programs for children β storytimes, STEM activities, craft programs, homework help, and summer reading. No card needed for programs; a card (also free) lets you check out materials.

Summer Meals Program: When school is out, dozens of Triangle sites serve free breakfast and lunch to all children 18 and under. No ID, no questions asked. Text "FOOD" to 877-877 to find the nearest location.
Backpack Buddies: Weekend food bags sent home with qualifying elementary students through TABLE and school partnerships.
