Timing
Arrive 60-90 minutes early for the best spots. Bring a frisbee or ball for the wait time.
Movies do not start until dark β usually 8:30-9pm in summer. Plan accordingly with young kids.
Most movies end around 10:30-11pm β way past bedtime. Accept it and enjoy.Positioning
Middle-ish and slightly off-center gives the best screen view
Near the edges is better for families with runners who need bathroom access
Behind the main crowd works if you have chatty kids β less disruptionFood Strategy
Pre-feed dinner at home β movie snacks should be light
Popcorn from home β microwave a few bags, put in gallon ziplock bags. Tastes just like movie theater at zero cost.
Frozen juice boxes β they thaw during the pre-movie wait and are perfectly cold by showtime
No crinkly wrappers β they are loud and annoying in an outdoor settingKid Management
Younger kids may not make it through the whole movie β and that is fine. Leave when you need to.
Bring a backup activity β coloring books or small toys for the pre-movie wait
Glow sticks β cheap and entertaining during the dark wait before the movie starts
Buddy system for bathroom trips β always go in pairs in the darkWeather
Check the forecast β most series cancel for rain but not for clouds
Bring layers β temperature can drop 10-15 degrees after sunset
Dewy grass β lay a tarp under your blanket to stay dryMaking It Special
These free movie nights can become some of your family's best memories with a little extra effort:
Theme your snacks to the movie (fish crackers for a beach movie, etc.)
Let each kid bring one special snack they picked themselves
Take a family photo at each movie night β you will love looking back at them
Make it a routine β every other Friday is movie night at our house all summer
Invite friends β more blankets, more fun, and the kids entertain each otherFree outdoor movies are one of the Triangle's best summer traditions. The combination of warm evening air, a big screen, and your family snuggled on a blanket β it is the kind of simple, perfect memory that childhood is made of.
