Go-Kart Tracks and Arcades in the Triangle
When your kids are tired of playgrounds and you need something with more adrenaline, the Triangle's go-kart tracks and arcades deliver. Here is what is available and who each venue is best for.
Go-Kart Tracks
Frankie's Fun Park (Raleigh)
Frankie's has multiple go-kart tracks including options for different age groups. Junior karts are available for younger drivers (typically ages 5-8, minimum height around 42 inches), while standard karts are for older kids, teens, and adults. Races run about $8-10 per ride. The tracks are outdoor and well-maintained. During peak times, expect waits of 15-30 minutes. Multi-ride and combo passes offer better value.Rush Hour Karting (Garner/South Raleigh)
Rush Hour Karting is an indoor electric karting facility near Garner. This is a step up from amusement park go-karts: real racing karts on an indoor track with timed laps and competition. Races run about $20-25 per session. Minimum age is typically 8 with height requirements. This is where speed-loving tweens and teens will want to go. The experience is closer to real racing than anything at a fun park.Speed Raceway (Various)
Check for Speed Raceway or similar indoor karting facilities in the Triangle area. Indoor electric karting has been expanding, and new locations open periodically. These tend to be cleaner, faster, and more competitive than outdoor fun-park karts. Pricing is similar to Rush Hour at $20-25 per race.Major Arcades and Family Entertainment Centers
Dave & Buster's (Cary)
Dave & Buster's at Crossroads in Cary is the big arcade/restaurant combo. Hundreds of arcade games, a full restaurant, and a prize redemption counter. Game play is via a rechargeable card ($20-40 is a good starting amount). Half-price Wednesdays make it more affordable. The food is standard chain quality but convenient. Best for ages 6+ who can handle the stimulation. Teens love it.Main Event (Triangle Area)
Main Event offers bowling, laser tag, gravity ropes, and a massive arcade under one roof. Similar pricing to Dave & Buster's for arcade games. The multi-activity format makes it a great destination for a birthday party or long afternoon. Ages 4+ depending on the activity.Frankie's Arcade (Raleigh)
Frankie's indoor arcade complements their outdoor go-karts and mini golf. It is large with a mix of redemption games, racing simulators, claw machines, and classic titles. Load a game card and set a budget. The arcade alone can keep kids busy for 1-2 hours.Chuck E. Cheese (Multiple Locations)
For the under-8 crowd, Chuck E. Cheese still exists and still works. Locations in Raleigh and Durham. The games are age-appropriate, the pizza is... edible, and young kids genuinely enjoy it. Expect to spend $30-50 for a child to play for an hour. Not glamorous, but effective.Retro and Specialty Arcades
Boxcar Bar + Arcade (Raleigh)
Boxcar on Martin Street in downtown Raleigh is a bar with free-play retro arcade games. This is an adults-only venue in the evenings, but during certain daytime hours, families with kids may be welcome. Check their policy. The retro game selection (Pac-Man, pinball, fighting games) is excellent. Teens 16+ may especially enjoy this.Game Theory (Raleigh)
Game Theory near NC State is another retro arcade bar. Similar concept to Boxcar with vintage games. Check family-friendly hours. What to Expect Cost-Wise

Tips for Parents
1. Set a spending limit before arrival. Arcades are designed to separate you from your money. Give each kid a fixed-amount game card. 2. Go on deal nights. Dave & Buster's half-price Wednesdays save real money. 3. Ear protection for sensitive kids. Arcades are very loud. 4. Combo passes. Frankie's combo passes that include go-karts, mini golf, and arcade credits are the best value. 5. Skip the prize counter. Or set expectations low. A kid will spend $40 in game credits to win a $2 stuffed animal.
