Recreational
CASL (Capital Area Soccer League) β The largest youth soccer organization in North Carolina. Recreational programs start at U4 (under 4) and are pure fun β no score-keeping, no pressure. Fall and spring seasons. Cost: $100-$160 per season. Games are Saturdays throughout Raleigh, Cary, and surrounding areas.
Triangle Futbol Club (Durham) β Rec and competitive programs. Known for excellent coaching even at the rec level. $90-$150 per season.
Chapel Hill-Carrboro Soccer Club β Serves Orange County families. Small, community-focused. $80-$130 per season.
Competitive / Travel
CASL also runs competitive teams starting at U9. Tryouts are in May. Costs jump significantly: $1,500-$3,000 per year plus tournament travel. Multiple Triangle clubs compete at the state and regional level.
NC Courage Youth (affiliated with the pro women's team) β For serious players. Elite training, higher cost, significant time commitment.
Baseball and Softball
North Raleigh Baseball League β One of the best-organized rec leagues in the area. T-ball starts at age 4. Spring season is the main season, fall is shorter. $75-$125 per season.
Durham Athletic Park Youth Baseball β Plays at the historic former home of the Durham Bulls. How cool is that? Rec level, affordable ($60-$100), and community-focused.
Cary-Apex Cal Ripken / Babe Ruth β Well-run league in western Wake County. Ages 4-15. $100-$150 per season.
Triangle Fastpitch Softball β For girls interested in competitive softball. Multiple clubs throughout the Triangle.
Basketball
Raleigh Parks and Recreation runs recreational basketball leagues for ages 5-17. Registration opens in October for winter season. Cost: $50-$80. Games at community centers throughout the city.
YMCA Basketball β Available at all Triangle Y locations (A.E. Finley, Alexander Family, Chapel Hill, etc.). Emphasis on sportsmanship and participation. $65-$100 per season.
Durham Parks and Rec β Affordable recreational leagues. Registration fills fast. $40-$70 per season.
For competitive basketball, Team United and Carolina Basketball Club are respected AAU organizations.
Swimming
Triangle Aquatic Center (TAC) in Cary β Home of TAC Titans swim team, one of the top programs in the Southeast. Year-round competitive swimming. But they also have learn-to-swim and pre-competitive programs for beginners. Membership plus swim team: $150-$250/month.
Neighborhood swim teams β If you live in a swim-and-tennis community, the summer swim team is THE social activity for kids ages 5-18. Low pressure, team spirit, and your kids will spend all summer at the pool. Typical cost: $75-$150 for the summer season.
YMCA swim teams β Available at Y locations with pools. More affordable than club swimming ($50-$100/month) and less time-intensive.

Lacrosse
Growing fast in the Triangle. Raleigh Rattlers Youth Lacrosse and Durham Lacrosse offer spring rec and fall ball programs. Ages 6 and up. $100-$175 per season plus equipment (sticks cost $30-$100 for beginners).Flag Football
NFL Flag Football leagues run through various rec departments and the YMCA. Perfect for ages 5-12 who want to try football without tackling. $60-$100 per season.Gymnastics

Pediatricians generally recommend kids try multiple sports before age 10 rather than specializing early. This reduces injury risk and burnout.

The Triangle's youth sports community is vibrant and welcoming. Start at the rec level, let your kid find what they love, and remember β it's supposed to be fun. The scholarship to play D1 is a bonus, not the goal.
